Show MANY YOUNGSTERS 10 BE TRIED OUT SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 23. Quite a number of young players who have been showing class around the bay are to get a chance to show what they can do in professional company this year. Nick Williams had a small army of bushers with him at Marysvllle last year, trying to pick some talent for the Spokane team, but he had no luck. The J boys he had were not ready to play professional ball, and he left most of them in California when he went north. But the Oakland club has scouts out giving close inspection to every young-stor young-stor who shows class, and Del Howard will have a bunch of them at the training train-ing camp. Jerry Downs of the Seals will also have some. It will then bo up to the lads themselves to sink or swim. I Among those who make the training train-ing trip with the Oakland club are Red Allenv a first baseman; Bob Smale and Lefty Maiis, outfielders. Smale belonged be-longed to the Snokane club, but ar rangements will be made with Nick Williams to let him train with Oak-1 land. Maas has been playing with! Crockett, and is said to bo a goodj man. Lambert of St. Mary's is a fast I ball pitcher of considerable promise. I and some of the Coast league clubs arc after him. Brandon is another pitcher pit-cher who may get a Job bon account of his hitting. Ho looks like a natural ihitter and ho may givo up pitching and become an outileldor. Brandon surprised sur-prised his friends a few days ago by I getting married, but he is still in ; school. A number of St. Mary's boys have gone straight from the college campus to the big leagues, but from .ill accounts ac-counts tho present crop will have to serve an apprenticeship in tho minors. ! |
