Show '?fKoip SALT LAKE, Dec. 30. The Manhattan Manhat-tan club has once more taken on its old name of "Tho Home of Knockout Battles." The fans with an appetite for "plledriving" blows went home satisfied sat-isfied last night. There were six bouts on the bill, and four of them terminated terminat-ed in knockouts. The main bout between Heine Schu-man, Schu-man, the fighting marine, and Pat Gilbert Gil-bert was quickly over. After about five seconds of boxing, Gilbert found the going not quite to his liking and allowed Schuman to end tho fight almost al-most as soon as it started. A little drive t6 the stomach was enough fori Pat. The bout was scheduled for six rounds. i Gilbert claimed a foul but Referee I Downing declined to allow it. It 'was reported that Schuman last night sig-ned tip with A. J. Auerbach , to box under the latter's management. Harry Stoney, boxing instructor at the Deserct gym, was in Schuman's corner last night and expects to devoto a deal : of attention to the- young marine's training. Auerbach managed Jack Dempsey for a time when Jack began ; his career here. j The semiwindup between Cyclone , Lefty and Jack Ryan, the Ogden favo-i favo-i rite, lasted just about as long as the ! mam event, ltyan opened uie iignt-; ing with a few hard rights to the face, j then Lefty decided it was. enough and i with a swinging blow to tho face seutj Ryan down for tho count. j The- real feature on the bill was I what started to be a four-round contest j i between Frankie Smithers of the west j side, and Art Newsoh of the war pris-j I on guards. The first round saw Smith- j ers pretty badly worsted and listening for the bell, but the second round did not find the same condition, as he did not give Newson a chance to set, and with a mighty overhanded rap on the chin sent Art down and out for the night. The bout had the earmarks of a real set-to, and when placed on the bill at any future date should, draw a crowd. Pat Haley and Carl Peterson were on the card for, a four-round bout, but a few hard rights to the face convinced con-vinced Carl that he was no match for Haley. Peterson took the count at the opening of the second round. Fighting George and Young Briggs put on a swell four-round movie contest. con-test. At shadow, boxing this pair are champs. It was well toward the last round when George cut loose and Briggs was content to cover himself the rest or the match. George was awarded the decision. Young Smith and Young Brown i opened the show with a three-round bout. It was a lively affair for the first two rounds, but the third one found both boys tired and waiting for the bell. The bout was given to Brown. |
