Show UINTAH BASIN OIL FORMATION That the Uintah basin in eastern j Utah will become an important oil field, a strong rival of "Wyoming and other oil-producing districts, is the belief of J. W. Musser, who has returned re-turned from an inspection of oil properties prop-erties in tho basin. Mr. Musser has been actively identified with tho development de-velopment of tho basin country for the past fifteen years and it is his opinion that no movement yet inaugurated in-augurated offers the same opportunities opportuni-ties for rapid and important development develop-ment as is now offered by the oil industry. in-dustry. "An unusual activity is manifested," said Mr. Musser, "both in locating oil lands and in drilling for oil. Since last January more than 300,000 acres have been located fofoil and a great deal of eastern capital is finding its way into tho basin. "Tho work to date is largely of a validation character and the wells drilled, numbering about 300, are most-ly most-ly shallow, with a yield -of from five to fifty barrels a day. Standard rigs are now being shipped into the basin and within the next few months it is expected ex-pected that several deep wells will be driven which will prove heavy producers. pro-ducers. Immense Deposits. "Mountains of oil shale and saturated satur-ated oil sands are found in the basin. Geologists say that more than 10,000 feet of cretaceous strata lie beneath the shale, all rich in carbonaceous materials. ma-terials. With these conditions and the almost inexhaustible beds of gilsonite. elaterite, tabbyite, ozokerite and other hydro-carbons there can be little question ques-tion that immense deposits of oil will be tapped when development work is properly prosecuted. "The oil already discovered is generally gen-erally of a paraffin base and contains from 40 to 60 per cent 'gasoline. I made a careful examination of the properties of the Cedar Butte Oil com- pany, north of White Rocks. Dr. P. S. , Coke of Oakland, Cal., is managing j JM director of the company and under his iH direction a considerable amount of - jH validation work has been done." OO J Ur 1 |
