Show I Little Traveling to I Be Done by Football I Teams This Year I WASHINGTON, Sept 13. Football programs for this fall at colleges and universities with army student train-B train-B ing corps units will not be interrupt- B cd by the war department except Hi where they actually would interfere with military training. H Protests whicli began to reach mem- B bers of congress yesterday against B the action of an officer of the train- B ing corps service in advising that foot- B ball schedules be abandoned, drew an B offiical statement from the war depart- B ment today that no step had been au- B fhorized. On the contrary, it was stat- B ed that the educational institutions B would be advisea formally to continue B their athletic schedules without per- B mitting them to cdrtail the military B course. B CHICAGO, Sept. 13. The meeting B of the football coaches of the big ten B scheduled to be held here tomorrow B to draft the 191S-19 schedule, was can- B ecled by L. J. Cooke of the University B of Minnesota, secretary of the com- B mittee. today. The meeting, however, B probably will be held at a late date B in view of the war department an- B nouncement that Intprcollcgiato ath- B letics would be encouraged. B Satisfaction was expressed by foot- B ball coaches throughout the western B conference tonight that the war de"- B partment is strongly in favor of the B continuation of intercollegiate athlet- B ics and will encourage the playing of B the 191S football schedule instead of abandoning them. H A. A. Stagg, of the University of B Chicago, announced that he would B the practice season Monday, and that B other coaches in the "Big Ten" were B planning on launching the practice B season next weeli. B The University of Chicago schedule will be carried out as originally plan-ned, plan-ned, but Coach Stagg said it was prob-able prob-able that Minnesota and one or two other universities in the conference would be obliged to cancel one or two games which -would require long trips away from home. |
