Show JOSEPH 0. FDWLES IS NOW 1 ENSIGN !1 hie nwr . 1 i Ensign Joseph D. Fowles, of' Lhol United States Navy, Is home for a fewj weeks leave of absence from the third", naval district of New York. Ensign Fowles joined the navy as. an apprentice seaman at the local re- crulting office last December. He was transferred to Salt Lake, and from! there to the navy training station at; San Diego. - There he was kept in training as a seaman for a period of; about n month and a half. After training at San Diego, he was sent to a naval base on the eastern coast, where he was when assigned , to sea on a United States battleship. While aboard ship tho young man; first studied as an electrician and la -! ter as a gunner. During this time he was studying quietly for the duties of a commissioned officer. His efforts, which were conducted without an in - j structor, resulted in the successful, passing of an examination for the po-1 sition of ensign. i Nine months from the time he en -! listed as an apprentice seamen he was commissioned by the chief naval of-! ficer at Washington, D. C. He was then assigned to New York. At the end of his leave of absence, Ensign Fowles will report, at New York, but expects to be assigned for detail work at Annapolis for a short time. , Mr. Fowles was graduated from the Weber academy with the class of 1916. |
