Show ! MAKE THE FARM HOME MODERN By PROF. P. G. HOLDEN. WHY should a farmer's wife be compelled to carry water from a distance dis-tance when running water and drainage may be installed In or adjacent to the kitchen at small expense? I Storage tanks, which furnish running water throughout the house, are coming Into general use. They are inexpensive and easy to install. On any farm where power is used there is no reason why a good water supply may not be provided for the household. I i ! ! This Ib the Daily Task of Thousands of Women Whc Live on the Farms Wasted Time and Energy Which Can Be Saved by the Expenditure of a Littlt ; .Time and Money. The housewife can ) plan the arrangement of ' her kitchen in such a manner ns to save her, many steps. The kitch- j en is her work shop, and ' her husband should see that she Is provided with the same conven- lences which he de- , mands in his work. I There are but few who cannot afford to substitute a dover egg beater for a fork, a long handled soup ladle for a cup, a food grinder for ' a meat chopper. A can I opener will save time f 1 and labor; sharp knives ' I for carving and slicing nro necessities. These are all cheap and add to the efficiency of housework. A bread I mixer, a fireless cooker and vacuum cleaner are -within tho reach of many. I Have a box built for the wood or coal. Put It on castors, fill It j near the door and wheel J It near the stove. This , will prove a great convenience con-venience and will keep much dirt out of the 8 kitchen. N j The proper arrange- D mcnt of cooking ntea-, slls will lighten the ( work. Kettles which' are used daily should fl ibe placed where they can be reached without stooping and without moving ;other utensils. The potato masher Is used at the stove. Hang It on a hook I jnear by. A wire frame for covers near the range will be convenient. A shelf; J (for salt, pepper, and matches within reach as the housekeeper works at the stove : H ;wlll save countless steps. The dishpan should be hung near the places for ' I washing dishes. Some housewives Insist upon putting them out of sight. In 1 1 most cases this means many extra steps every time they are needed. A good poring knife which fits the hand may make the pealing of potatoes a restful rather than a tiresome task. The farmer has a scoop shovel, a spade, a long-handled and a short-handled shovel, because each Is adapted to a certain klnd of work. It seems unfair that his wife should be compelled to use one poor butcher knife for nil processes where knives are needed. D The sink Is usually placed with the long side against the wall, but this is j I not always the best plan. Some modern houses have the sink near the middle jOf the kitchen so that It may be used from both.sldes. 1 1 Insist upon having n drainboard upon ench side of your sink, one for dirty, 1 1 'dishes, the other for draining. For the averncc. family this means the saving ! Q 'of time in dish washing. i I X |
