Kilt Not National Dres$ of Scotland By many people, the kilt I regarded aa the national dress of Scotland, but thla la not correct, for it is worn only In the Highlands and haa never been popular In the Lowlands. The kilt was suppressed by act of parliament in 1743, after the Jacobite rebellion, and though it was tolerated at a later date, it never became popular again. The earliest mention of the kilt la to be found in an obscure passage of the Norwegian history of Magnus Barefoot, a king of that country who came to the llehrtdea in the Eleventh century. It appears that the dress of thoae duya consisted of a sort of skirt, dyed or painted, and a mantle, the former being the original of the kilt and the latter of the plaid. In "Letters from the North of Scot-land," published in 172ft, the author describee the Highlanders as wearing "a bonnet made of thrum, without a brim ; a short coat, a waistcoat longer by five or six inchea ; short stocking, and brogues without heels. Over thla habit they wear a plaid, which I usu-ally three yards long and two breadth wide, and the whole garb la made of chequered tartan." CLOSE CONTEST EMI Rain Put Halt to Magna-Copp- Came in Seventh Inning and Score Reverts Back to Sixth. Both Team Score Two Run. ' Magna and Copper battled to a 2 to 2 tie at MaKia Sunday afternoon, the game being called in the seventh when a rain storm troke up what probably would have terminated in a Copper victory. With the score 4 to 2 in the seventh in favor of the Copper, and with Magna at bat with one man out and one man on base, the heavens started to shed many tears, and after a few minutes, Umpire Scanlon called the game, the score reverting back to the six innings, which left the two teams iu a deadlock at 2 to 2. "Dutch" Urvshner took the hill toy of the Copper team, and had the lo-cals eating out of his li.mu, the best hey could gather being six hits. The hard hitting Egbert of the Magna team twice fanned out with men on bases. Lot (, Magna southpaw, did the heavy work for the '1 reseder clan, and also pitched a great game, al-though he started to weaken in the sixth and seventh, when the visitors began finding his benders. Magna drew first blood in the third inning when Meyers walked, and on his steal to second, Muir threw, high ,and on Puw's throw to third, Stillman juggled, the Magna shortstop completing the circuit. Copper couldn't do a thing with Lott until the sixth, when they scor-ed two markers. Santistcvan singled infield and scored on Muir' hit to right, after liaty had whiffed. Dow whiffed, but Whiteley singled to short, scoring Muir. The last run of the game as far as the game proper is concerned was scored by Magna in the sixth when Howard picked one of Greshncr's twisters for a home run to right cen-ter. Copper started another rampage in the seventh, which, however, was not allowed. Swensen singled to right, and Creshner singled to second base after Howard had allowed Swensen to get to third on two passed balls, the "Swede" scoring on Greshner's in-field swat. Buckle waited for four wide ones, and the next two men went out, but Muir delivered the nec-essary swat scoring Greshner, Ituikle being caught at the plate. These two runs were not allowed, but it won't hurt to record them as it shows that the Copper team is at last hitting its stride. Many brilliant plays added to the afternoon's entertainment, Kgbert bringing the crowd to its feet in the fifth when he made a wonderful shoe string catch of Buckle's line drive. Archibald robbed Baty of a hit in the third with a brilliant catch of his fly, while Muir startled the natives with a great catch of Archibald's foul in the fifth. Santistevan and Nielsen each made two hits. The dope: Copper 2 Player Pes .
