Show NAVV SPEEDING OP RECRUITING Still Short 13,514 Men of Full Authorized Strength of 74,500. WASHINGTON, March 22. The navv is short 13.514 men of its present authorized enlisted strength of 74,500! and efforts to speed up recruiting arc being redoubled The present month has seen the largest recruitment on ' record, with a net increase of 1947. Since congress authorized the 74,500 total in September, 5454 men have I been added to the navy's personnel.; It was stated at the department to-1 day that the authorized strength is sufficient to put ail ships Immediately available in commission and no effort will be spared in bringing the force to that figure To induce recruiting congress provided provid-ed that 100 enlisted men a year should be elected by examination for ap-1 pointment to the navy academy. Navv officials Bay that a very high type of officer material is beine secured in this fashion. The w ay to commissions in I the marine corps and to responsible and well paid positions as warrant or1 petty officers is also being opened as! fully as possible to boys who enlist. A recruit need serve only one year in the navv to be eligible for examination examina-tion for appointment to Annapolis and every possible opportunity for study and instruction to enable him to pass the examination is furnished aboard the ships or at the training stations. oo |
