Show CONSPIRACY TO DEFRAUD CHARGED Salt Lake. Ajril 29 Ben Davis, a local shoe merchant, and Leonard Vanden Akker formerly connected With Ilyman Lewis, bankrupt, in the shoe business in this city, were arrested ar-rested yesterday on federal warrants charging them with conspiring to defraud de-fraud the creditors of Lewis by concealing con-cealing some of Lewis's assets when the latter filed his petition in bankruptcy bank-ruptcy on February 10, last. The two men were taken before United States Commissioner C harles Baldwin for arraignment. Da is was released upon furnishing $ri,0(n bond and Vanden Van-den Akker on $1 500 bond. Warrants were also issued yesterday yester-day for the arrest of Hyman Lewis and Leland Lewis, but neither man has been arrested. They are charged with being members of the alleged conspiracy with Davis and Vanden Akker. Specifically, the complaint, which is sworn to by Walter Wright, manager mana-ger of the Utah Association of Credit Men, alleges that the four defendants "unlawfully, wilfully knowingly and feloniously did conspire, combine, confederate con-federate and agree together to commit com-mit an offense against the United States in and by corruptly and fraudulently fraud-ulently agreeing together in nnticl-I nnticl-I ation of the bankruptcy of said Hyman Hy-man Lewis, to conceal from the trustees in bankrutcy of said Hyman Lewis, to be thereafter appointed, and while the said Hyman Lewis was a bankrupt, certain property, towit, fif-ty-two ( 52 1 crates of shoes " Thf complaint also alleges that the men concealed the crates of shoes by having them stored in Eanston, Wyo. Mr Davis last night declared that he was entirely innocent of the charge made against him, and that he was not at any time connected with the i ei la company, before or after Its failure |
