Show j f WHY NEPHI L MORRIS WILL Ik BE NEXT GOVERNOR OF UTAH ' ' Jh Pending in Utah, with direct relation to commonwealth affairs, 1 1 1 j are issues as momentous to the state and its people as those which are j I j to be determined nationally. It is as important to Utah that Nephi L. 1 11; Morris shall be chosen Governor as that Charles E. Hughes shall be Ijjj elected President of the United Staets. -Both, happily, will occur. 4 ! The governorship. In Utah, more so ? U than in most states, is the keystone g of the arch of state government. In l jf j the hands of the governor, by organic 4 'm law Md by legislation, the people j jt have- placed a tremendous power Ml) which becomes utterly subversive of I J the principle of good government if , j ! i wrongfully used, and the basic founda- t j ' , I tlon o tuat Principle If applied as the : 1 J people wish it to be. For good or ill, j f j j In Utah, the governor Is governor in .j kj . fact as well as in name. The office 1 l, ffl is gTanted the authority that makes I : its occupant really governor. Over legislation, the governor has the power of suggestion and of disapproval. disap-proval. The veto power becomes, In the hands of the governor of Utah, a powerful instrument for beneficient or maleficent purpose because of the habit of Utah legislatures of enacting the most important, and the great majority ma-jority of the legislation of each succeeding suc-ceeding blennlum during the last few days of the session. By reason of this, the governor is given absolute, unhindered power of veto over the REPUBLICAN DEPT., CONTINUED proposed measures which concern the people most. Since It is generally conceded the next legislature will be Republican, it is apparent how essential essen-tial It is to the redemption of Republican Repub-lican platform pledges that a Republican Repub-lican governor shall sit for the next four years in the stately building on Capitol Hill. Equal to his control of legislation, Is the governor's control of state institutions in-stitutions and state boards. The selection se-lection of the men and women who shall direct the affairs of these commonwealth com-monwealth Institutions in which the people take so much pride, and of the numerous state board that dischargo important functions, is the business of the governor. It is important that this authority shall not fall into the hands of a Democratic governor with his lack of sympathy with the constructive con-structive work of past years, and his power to undo what the Republican party has been doing for the" upbuilding upbuild-ing of the state. It is Important that the structure of governmental efficiency, effi-ciency, so wisely and patiently reared during the years of Republican rule, should not bo destroyed. Nephi L. Morris, Republican candidate candi-date for governor, merits the support of every Republican because he is carrying car-rying forward Republican principles as set forth in the Republican platforms plat-forms in state and nation. His participation partic-ipation in the schism that divided the Republican party is not now of moment. mo-ment. The party is everywhere reunited, re-united, Progressives and Republicans are laboring togother under the single party name and banner for state and national tickets. The necessity that Republican principles shall be advanced ad-vanced has prompted all to forget that a few years ago they were at one another's an-other's throats. It matters not, in this year of 1916, what men were, politically, polit-ically, in other years. It is sufficient that this year they are loyally supporting sup-porting the ticket Mr. Morris merits also the support of the Independent voter, because the character of the platform upon which he stands, with the Republican party reputation for redeeming its platform promises, and because his capabilities are superior to those of his opponent. Ho will worthily represent Utah at home and abroad. He- was born and grew to manhood here, laboring always al-ways for the advancement of Utah Industry, In-dustry, understanding always the needs of the state and its people. His personal program of legislative and executive action that he has repeatedly repeat-edly outlined assures a marked improvement im-provement in the economic life of the state. If there is any reason why the Republican Re-publican state of Utah should fail this year to elect a Republican governor as usual, diligent scrutiny of the situation situ-ation fails to disclose it. |
