Show CROWLEY BEFORE DISTRICT COURT Testifies That U. S. Attorney Offered Him Immunity for Giving Information. San Francisco, Dec. 29. C. C. Crowley, Crow-ley, chief detective for the German consul, testified in the district court today that John W. Preston, United States district attorney, offered him immunity if he would help Preston "get" Franz Bopp, German Consul-general and E. II. von Shack, vice-consul. Crowley, Bopp, von Shack and others oth-ers are on trial for conspiring to dynamite allied v;ar munition ' shipments ship-ments in 1915. "Its the higher ups we want We want your information to get the consul con-sul and the vice consul," Preston said, according to Crowley. Crowley was questioned by Preston Pres-ton in an effort to ascertain whether the witness had any knowledge of movements in connection with revolutionary revolu-tionary intrigues in Mexico and in India. "Did you ever assist in conveying arms to Villa, agents in Mexico?" Preston asked. "No," the witness answered. Crowley also denied he had sent 27,000 to Los Angeles to assist in supplying the steamship Maverick for a Hindu revolutionary expedition.- The Maverick with war munitions and a number of "knock down" submarines sub-marines was captured by the British early in the year 1915 in Java waters. nn |
