Show CHHSIUN SCIENCE ANSWER 1 ATTACK II HEHBY OSTROM Henry A. Teasdel Declares He Cannot Comprehend How a Christian Minister Can Spend His Time Trying to Hinder the Growth of a Christian Religion Because Its Members Mem-bers Are Not Traveling His Road to Heaven. Editor Ogden Standard, Ogden, Utah. Dear Sir The Standard, of March 27th, publishes an uncalled for attack on Christian Science by Dr. Henry Ostrom, to -which I trust you will grant mo spaco to reply. On March 25th, another local paper contained con-tained extracts from a sermon delivered de-livered along tho same Hues by tho reverend gentleman, a reply to which was published several days later It seems difficult to comprehend how a Christian minister can spend his time trying to hindor the growth of a Christian religion because its members are not traveling the road to heaven that ho believes to be tho right one, and can only be accounted for "by the fact that he lacks understanding under-standing of the teachings of Christian Science. If ho were acquainted with many Christian Scientists, the lives they lead would bejvp. object lesson to him and would cauiio him to investigate investi-gate more closely to find out what it Is that makes them healthier, happier, and more contented. Our friend does not distinguish between be-tween tho spiritual man made in God'3 imago and likeness and tho Adam or mortal man. Ho takes exceptions ex-ceptions to a published report of a Christian Science lecture recently delivered de-livered in Ogden whero tho lecturer stated: "We cannot imagine a sick God and, therefore, man cannot be sick." God is a spirit and consequently Is not subject to the Ills of the flesh, neither is the spiritual man, the man mado in His imago and likeness. This is the man referred to in the lecturer's lectur-er's statement and not tho mortal or sinning man who suffers for his sins. Our friend further says: "Many refined and cultured people of the churches have thus been mislead," mis-lead," and "the trick if his reasoning becomes the trap for many." Perhaps so, according to his view, but it is not reasonable to suppose that the class of -people ho refers to would bo sufficiently educated to be equally capable of discovering that trap, if there were one? And cgain: "Their training has been Bible training, now they are taking the Quarterly; their training has been to a life of prayer, but now thoy follow the teachings of Sirs. Eddy, who says : that 'prayer to a personal God is a hindrance ' " i One-half of the Christian Science ; Quarterly is composed of Bible 'efer- j ences so that If the Quarterly wero used tlieir Bible training would be i greater than over before. Christian t Science teaches us to pray aright so' that prayer may be answered. Such prayer is not offered to a material, ; personal God. We read in the 24th ; verso of John IV: "God is a Spirit,; and they that worship Him must wor- i ship Him in spirit t'.nd in truth." ! Christian Science docs not deny , that mortal can suffer affliction, but it does deny that God sends affliction or uses it for man's betterment. Affliction Af-fliction is frequently caused by wronk thinking and wrong living, which, if accepted, produce a cure. It is unwise to speak slightingly of the healing power of Christian Science Sci-ence for there are many thousands of living witnesses as to its eificacy. Science Is the law of God, and Mrs. Eddy says on pago 22 of "Miscellaneous "Miscellane-ous Writings:" "That Christian Science Sci-ence is Christian, those who have demonstrated dem-onstrated it, according to tho rules of its divine Principle, together with tho sick, the lame, the deaf, and the blind, healed by it, have proven to a waiting world. He who has not tested it, is incompetent to condemn it; and he who is a willing sinner, cannot demonstrate it." Thanking you, I am Very truly yours, (Signed) HENRY A. TBASDEL. |
