He has a short ; way with them, however, i Mr. Davis, for example, sat In the i smoking room om a Bar Harbor hotel ; one evening with a cigar and novel when a bore said to him from across. "Well, sir, Is Wilson too proud to fight or not?" Davis looked up calmly from his novel, blew a cloud Into the air and said. "Wilson? What Wilson?" J 'Why Wogdrow Wilson, of course!" said the astonished borcO President Woodrow Wilson! Did you never hear of him?" No." said Davis, "I never did," and he yawned and took up his novel again. The bore regarded him darkly for ten minutes. Then he attacked him again. "Looking kind of black for Bern-storff-I guess he'll get his walking papers, hey?" he said "Bernstorff" said Pavis. "Who the duce Is Bernstorff?" "What1 You never heard of him cither?" shouted the bore. "No," said Davis, "never" Five minutes of silence. Then the bore took a long pull at his glass and said bitterly: "I guess you never heard of Adam, did you?" Davis frowned as If In intent thought. "Adam? Adam?" he said. Whaf's his last name?" |
