Show -oo . MOTOR VEHICLES TO BE TAXED. Taxing of motor vehicles from $5 to $16 a year is provided for in a bill which has passed both houses of the legislature and Is now before tha governor for his signature. The measure b expected to produce a revenue of $52,000, covering as 1t does not only automobiles but motorcycles. motor-cycles. The bill prescribes a reasonable speed for all motor vehicles, requiring machines to be under control at all times, whether within the limits of a city or out on the country roads, which is a good feature and should prevent much of the reckless driving of both automobiles and motorcyolee Indulged in by those who go joy rid ing. The following schedule of registration registra-tion foes 1s provided in the bill: For motorcycles, $3; for eleotrlc pleasure vehicles, $5; for commercial passenger-oarryfng motor vehicles tpubhc machinesi. $10, for commercial commer-cial non passenger-carrying machines, $10, for pleasure cars of not exceeding exceed-ing tweuty-five horsepower, $6; for pleasure cars of twenty-five to forty horsepower, $10; for pleasure cars of more than forty horsepower, $15; for dealers' transferable license, $25 . If the fees are not paid on or before July 1 of each year an additional fine of one half the registration fee is imposed Public chauffeurs must pay a $2 license fee. Nonresident owners may drive their machines in this state lor a period of thirty days without sj state license. Violations of the provisions of the act are pun-I pun-I ishable by tines of not less than 810 and not more than $100, or Imprison ment for not less than ten days and not more than three months As the owners of motor vehicles enjoy en-joy much of the benefits of good roads, it is only fair that they should be re quired to directly help maintain the roads, and. furthermore, the greater majority of the possessors of machines ma-chines are well-to-do and this special tax will inflict on them no hardships and the mcney collected will be expended ex-pended in adding to their enjoyment. rw |
