Show LATE CHAPLAIN WAS FATHER OF BOXING New York, Nov. 19. The Ror. Father Fa-ther William Honry Ironsides Reaney, chaplain of tho United States navy with the rank of captain, who died here last night "wns often called the father of boxing in tho United States navy. Ho also introduced other athletic ath-letic sports among the sailors. Tho story is told that he once defeated Tom Sharkey, the sailor-pugilist when Sharkey's conduct at service on board ship displeased tho chaplain. Father Reaney spent tho greater part of his more than twenty years of service serv-ice at sea, and was chaplain of Admiral Ad-miral Dewey's flagship, the Olympia. in tho battle of Manila bay. His last post at sea was on board the battlo-ship battlo-ship Utah. His body will bo taken to Detroit for burial. |
