Official Offi-cial announcement by the war office tonight of the sinking of the British transport Ramazan by a hostile submarine sub-marine In the Aegean sea in tho latter lat-ter part of September, previously reported, re-ported, shows that more than 300 men worn lnot xxfllAn fVin trononnpt wont down. The official statement says: "The war office announces that the British transport Ramazan was sunk by an enemy submarine by shell fire at 6 a. m., on September 19, off the Island of Antlkythria in the Aegean sea. Therp were about 300 Indian troops on board, of whom 75 were saved. Twenty-eight of the crew also were saved. A number of boats were smashed by shell fire "The survivors reached Antikyria in their own boats the same night and were kindly and hospitably treated treat-ed by the inhabitants." Previous announcement of the loss of the Ramazan came in a dispatch from Athens on September 28, which told of the presence of survivors of the transport on Greek territory, whence they had been sent by .the Greek government to Malta. No details, de-tails, regarding the transport's loss were given at the time. |
