Show SMALL VOLCANO IN THE MAKING NEAR OGDEN Editor Standard : Last Sunday, w ith Leonard Broadbent, the writer climbed to the location of the Duffy mine on the summit of a pc-ak south of Ogden canyon and two miles east of Ogden city. A vertical shaft of an unencumbered depth of thirty feet In the solid rock confronted Mr. Bixiadbent, one of the present locators, locat-ors, as tho only record of the strenuous strenu-ous labor of his predecessors who are as unknown as the depth of the shaft and the results obtained For some inscrutable reason, the camp out.it was apparently thrown Into the shaft and covered to a great depth with the crushed stone from the dump Developments give rise to the question of whether this was done to conceal the discovery of ore or to hide the evidence of a tragedy. A uumbf'i of bones, and what appears ap-pears to bp a tooth, were dug out with the oose rock and submitted to several physicians and a dentist, who kindly passed opinion on them. A vertebra, a floating rib and a tooth re sembling the human have been examined ex-amined but the relics found to date are too fragmentary tor positive Identification Iden-tification A tent pole, the copper eyelets of a tent, parts of a windlass and other debris une.uthed at a depth of seven feet provoke speculation as to th1 motive for filling iu the shaft, what secrets It holds and how much further fur-ther it is to the solid rock bottom. Mr Broadbent observed at some distance from the shaft a patch of rock which remained bare of snow throughout the winter. Upon investigation investi-gation he discovered a crack or fissure fis-sure out of which flows a steady current of warm air Pebbles dropped drop-ped in hint of great depth and a shot of dynamite gave only a muffled roar. The heat keeps the snow clear from a space approximately six feet wide and twenty-five feet long Not far from this spot, circular breathing places in tho snow mark more minute min-ute apertures In the rock. Can we boast a safety valve or hae we the makings of a volcano or an earthquake'' earth-quake'' Mountain climbing is not popular with the grown ups of Ogden though no doubt it would benefit many. It is recommended to the young as a body and character builder. Vacation time should find the Science Sci-ence club equipped with portable wireless wire-less apparatus for the camp and they might construct a telescope and instruments in-struments for a temporary weather bureau on one of the poaks. A lack of appreciation is retarding the world's progress and the inter-mountain inter-mountain country today (Signed) E. A. BATTELL |
