Show j WHY, THEY EVADED THE ISSUE. x Bf HI s '" . l On tomorrow' tiij primaries will be held, at which the voters are I J to select the candidates aspiring to office. The Standard, during D i this first half of the campaign, has pointed out why the men now in flj office should not be re-elected. The paper devoted to the cause of H Fell and Browning has been more concerned over the personality .of. I Wm. Glasmann and the former mayor has been made the issue by that 1 ' organ of malice. This turning from a defense of Mayor Fell and Commissioner Browning to attack Wm. Glasmann is an open confes- I si on of inability to successfully reply to the charges The Standard I I has brought against tho city board. There has been an effort to be-Iw be-Iw cloud the issue, to throw dust in the air, by bringing up the question l Kf the Glasmann administration. Naturally Mr. Glasmann thinks 1 ' fwell of his record,, and, when attacked and challenged to a com-I com-I parison, has replied' with vigor, as any other former city official 1 would have done veho-is proucl of his achievements in office. The I object of tbe assault ?was evident Rather than attempt to "explain t . why Fell and Browning gave away the threo fifty-year franchises, I ' "why they juggled the Avater funds, and added tremendously to the I j burden of taxation, the organ of those candidates sought to get as fl . far away from those subjects as possible, and, holding to that course, WM printed columns of abuse of the publisher of this paper. Hr'1 The campaign, up to date would indicate that Fell and Browning ! prefer to have the people discuss anything other than the record of the city official fortlje past four years. Eyen a conspiracy was launched, dealingvitKhe police records, accompanied by sensational charges, which fell flat the moment an investigation was started. These repeated attempts to. get away from a consideration of the records re-cords of the present; city commissioners afford proof that the com. missioners recognize .their own weakness. While The Standard has been showing up the shortcomings of i Mayor Fell and Commissioner Browning, -tho organ of those men has ! heen silent on the opposition candidates, except to occasionally rais- H represent them and misquote any public utterance they might make, jl To our mind, this is the best sign of the hopelessness of the Feil- H Browning side and the indefensible weakness of those men, and the H l strength of the candidates supported by The Standard. |
