J Since electrolysis has become an important factor in the life of pipe underground, under-ground, such installations are still further jeopardized and the necessity of pipe protection has become more apparent. J The steel used in the manufacture of "NATIONAL" Matheson Joint Pipe is the result of years of study and experiment and is exceptionally uniform and resistant to corrosion. i Even when no coating is applied, "NATIONAL" Matheson Joint Pipe will give the best service. CI However, it is the nature of iron to go into solution and be oxidized (or corroded); this reaction is accelerated ac-celerated according to the amount of free acid and salts that are in solution, and especially where stray electric currents leave the pipe. CJ Against such attacks, protection is secured with "NATIONAL" Coating. JJ "NATIONAL" Coating is a system of protection for pipe underground against corrosion and electrolysis. ; The pipe is first cleaned and then dipped in a hot special bituminous compound which is allowed to cool. J By a second operation the pipe is then spirally wrapped with fabric previously saturated with the hot bituminous compound. The coating thus applied is about 3-64 of an inch thick, whereas ordinary paints, or bituminous dips, rarely exceed 1-100 of an inch. Arguments have been advanced at various times that because it is necessary to coat pipe, the pipe itself must be weak. jj This is an erroneous assumption because there are installations of "NATIONAL" MATHESON JOINT PIPE, bid without any protective coating whatever, which have been in active service for 25 to 30 years and are slill in an excellent state of preservation as recent examination has proved. Locations of typical installations given on request. Therefore, when laid wit h the additional protection of "NATIONAL" COATING, the life of "NATIONAL" JOINT PIPE is practically indefinite.
