Show FRENCH TO MEET GERMAN DRIVE London, Aug. 1 In expectation of a new German drive in tho west following fol-lowing the fall of Wnrsaw, tho French are reported to be throwing great forces of men Into Alsace in order to force the Germans to divert large numbers which otherwise might be employed In a coastal drive. The fighting in Alsace is increasing In Intensity, while along tho rest of tho front tho only activity has been the rival artillery arms. Both Paris and Berlin report attacks in the region of Relchaker Kopf. The German war office states that French forces attempted to storm the German positions last- night but were repulsed, repuls-ed, while an official communique in Paris says that the Germans suffered heavy losses in unsuccessful assaults on the French lines at Reichaker Kopf I and Schratzmannele. The extent of the fighting in the Argonne during the last month, during which there have been numerous German Ger-man attempts to close in the circle around Verdun, is shown by a German official statement tonight. This review re-view records that GC10 French prisoners prison-ers were captured in this region between be-tween June 20 and July 20, besides 125 officers, fifty-two machine guns and a large quantity of war material. v- |
