Show i H. HEWN IS i SURPRISE FOR THE ACADEMY Tne C hristmas spirit was diffused this morning with impressive force at the Weber acadeni) where a splendid piogram was carried out. The affair v as jointly in commemoration of the j birth of Christ and the birth of the Mormon prophet, Joseph Smith cud. though the talks that were given were ll!led with thought along these themes sufficient to have made the affair rarely Interesting, tin' musical num-bera num-bera and incidental Interpolations of Other kinds mad' it the most enjoyable enjoy-able event of the school year. The program occupied nearly two 1 Lours time and probably the most pleaaing feature was the reception I '.'ii to v ii Henderaon, former t rincipa nt the school. Mr. Henderson .me to the school unannounced, from 1 . Idaho ranch, and when he en-' en-' tcred the auditorium, the students J gave him an ovation that lasted sev-I sev-I oral minutes. Later in the morning he gave a brief address expressing a feeling of love for the school and his former students in a way that was answered by another hearty outburst of school spirit. Many patrons of the school wer resent at the celebration and these together with the students completely filled the auditorium while the faculty, fac-ulty, members of the board of din e tors and other prominent visitors occupied oc-cupied the rostrum, TP. program was conducted by Principal James L Barker and was opt ned with a duet by Professors W 1 1 Manning and H. A. Dixon. The number was finely sung, and, though applauae was not permissible, appreciation appre-ciation was shown in the close attention atten-tion given. The invocation was of-i' of-i' President C P. Middleton and a violin tolo beautifully played b ('leone Rich, followed. The "Christmas Sentiment" was given In Mrs i.vdia Tanner the talk In in;, tilled with thoughts well chosen and devi oped In a manner that held the assembly with a perceptible feeling feel-ing of reverence during the time 0c- cupied by the speaker This was followed with a violin, ci-i'o and piano trio by Cleoni .von and Oertel Rich. The number v.an "Apple Blossoms" and proved so puling tha an encore was called for and given The Individual .laying .lay-ing of tltone three young ladles re-t'ealed re-t'ealed promising musicianship and in ci amble numbers such as they nave ! this morning they proved harmlng entertainers. The next number was the reading; of "The Terrible Meek," by T. Earl I'ardoe A more appropriate selection selec-tion could not well havo been choson and the well-known reader was at his best. Another fine duet was sung by ! Messrs Manning and Dixon, and . I Mary Jacobs told the beautiful story, I "Why the Chimes Rang," with fine I lnterpretath e insight These numbers, I too were well received I The "Joseph Smith" sentiment was given by Professor YV H Manning i nd his talk recalled many scenes in the life of the man whom the speaker ! r.nd his people claim was divinely called to usher in the last dispensation dispensa-tion of the gospel. The last two addresses were made DJ W. 11 Hendersoh and President r. F Middleton, the former speaking I both of his past associations with the school and his good wishes for , ita future. President Middleton spoke . as the representative of the school board of directors and told of the literest which the board had in the welfare of the institution, as well as I expressing some thoughts relative to the occasion which was being celebrated cele-brated A feature that gave much pleasure to all was the first appearance of the Weber academy band this season. Four programmed selections Serenade, Seren-ade, "Calm as the Night" (Barret). Mizzcurki. "The Concert" (Huff); march, "The Mariner" (Ramler); and "Progress March" (Fulton), were played by the organization, under the baton of Professor E. W Nichols. Each number was worthily encored, the first one three times and it is expected and hoped by the students and patrons of the school, that the band will play at all special programs during the remainder of the jear. Among the Incidental features of the occasion that called for displays of class spirit and laughter was the appearance of the Misses Lofgren ami SCOI llle upon the platform following the trio number of the Rich sisters The two young ladies took articles of various kinds and displayed them ' before the assembly as a notification of the bazaar that the junior clas is holding in the Colonel Hudson building build-ing this afternoon and tomorrow. This afternoon, the closing exer-I exer-I Cises were held in the different class I rooms and beginning with tomorrow. I a two w eeks' holiday will be taken oo |
