The attention of the United States department of food and drug inspection having been called recently to the widespread use of salicylic acid by housewives in putting up preserves, the department has issued an official warning against the practice A copy of this warning warn-ing was received yesterday by Frank B. Raynor. United States food and drug inspector, with headquarters in the federal building. The letter states that the practice, especially in rural communities, has grown to an enormous extent While some persons buy the acid itself for this purpose, others unwittingly secure se-cure it as put up under fanciful names and sold as presening powders pow-ders or canning compounds In these commercial compounds the housewife Is directed to fill the jar with the fruit or vegetables, cover with water and add a teaspoonful of the powder. pow-der. Commenting on this use of preserv-atives, preserv-atives, the bulletin Bays: "It is true that these powders prevent pre-vent the decay of fruits or vegetables, vegeta-bles, but they also encourage uncleanly un-cleanly or careless work and their excessive use may be attended with serious effects upon the health Salicylic Sali-cylic acid is a medicine of the greatest great-est value in acute rheumatism and certain other diseases. Complaints have been made to Mr Ranor by firms to whom goods have been consigned that were afterward seized by the department, that their names were published in the newspapers newspa-pers and that such publiclt is detrimental detri-mental to them, especially as they are the innocent parties |
