Show OPTIMISM FELT BY THEALLO B E ASHMEAD BARTLETT. (Special ( able by London Dally Telegraph). Tele-graph). In Belgium, Oct. 28 The allies' line between Nieuport and Dixmude has been subjected to a very seven strain during the last three days The Germans have developed overwhelming overwhelm-ing strength along this section of the line, and yet up to the present have failed to force the river and canal of Yser. After the failure of their attack at-tack upon Dixmude they sousht another an-other passage across the river opposite oppo-site Perces. Here they succeeded in porting some infantr units across on pontoon pon-toon bridges, but these were driven back on the following morning by Belgian Bel-gian artillery and the bridges were destroyed. The Germans suffered heavily, lonin many men by drowning, drown-ing, while a number surrendered. On Friday and Saturday they re newed their attempts to cross the Yser further north and nearer Nieuport, Nieu-port, between the hamlets of Raseap pelle and Mannekersvere Nieuport was heavily bombarded and a number num-ber of houses were destroyed by shell fire. Many civilians wen? killed. On Sunday and Monday the Germans Ger-mans made desperate efforts to follow fol-low up their success, but without pro gressing another yard On several occasions throughout these critical days it looked as If the allies mus fall back and abandon the line of the Yser Fighting along the whole line had been of the most severe character charac-ter and the losses were very heavy On Monday afternoon, however, events took a much more favorable turn. The Germans entirely failed to : follow up their early successes and were again driven back across the Yser. Their furious attacks on the center line at Pervyi also failed. On Sunday night one German regl ment did succeed In passing through the troops In front nf Dixmude and actually entered the town. Here they were caught in close formation and practically wiped out. Large numbers of prisoners havr-been havr-been made by the allies and many groups of Germans have surrendered voluntarily. The Belgian army is full of fight and the French troops are admirable, I and If they were once In greater number the safety of the line would be assured A general feeling of op tlmism preails along the front, today |
