Show BATTLE SCENES T1ILLVETERANS City of Detroit Riotous With Patriotic Demonstrations Thousands of Flags and Banners. Detroit. Sept 1. While veterans of the Civil war and their wives enjoyed en-joyed themselves on the water today, hundreds of thousands of flags and banners slapped and fluttered over I Detroit. Since the 48th national encampment en-campment of the Grand Army of the! Republic began last Saturday, the Ity has been the scene of patriotic demonstrations without number Local theaters, particularly moving picture shows, have offered "appropriate "appro-priate programs" to attract the old soldiers. Bull Run and Gettysburg were fought again yesterday and today to-day in pictures, and other historic incidents were reviewed in the same manner. Enthusiasm, such as the play hous es never before experienced, has been a common occurrence. Some times the climax to a thrilling scene has brought a ripping, piercing battle crj from a Grand Army man. Other comrades needed only the signal to join In the response, n a moment dozens or excited men were on their feet; bent forms became straight and hats shot toward the celling 20,000 G A. R.'c Present. It was estimated that more than 20,600 persons who are members ol the G. A. R., or an affiliated body, are now attending the encampment. Considerable routine husiness was transacted this forenoon at committee commit-tee meetings by the women's nation al organizations. The Sons of Veteran! Vet-eran! and the Association of Former Prisoners of War also held sessions. The first public meeting will be held tonight at Light Guard armory. A number of welcoming addresses nad responses are on the program. Gov ernor Ferris of Michigan, Mayor Oscar Os-car B. Marx of Detroit and Washington Washing-ton Gardner of Albion, commander-in-chief of the G. A. R. are among the speakers. The annual parade will take place tomorrow forenoon. oo |
