Show OPENING OF THE SUGAR FACTORY. Three weeks earlier than last season, sea-son, the farmers of Weber county this morning started to deliver their beets to the Ogden factorv of the Amalgamated Sugar company and by Monday next the big plant will begin the slicing of the saccharine tubers and will continue to operate until well Into the winter. The field superintendent of the local lo-cal factory places the crop In the Ogden Og-den district at 114,000 tons, which, with the plant reducing 600 tons a day, would require nearly 200 days to convert into sugar To relieve the local situation, ten carloads of beets are to be dally shipped to the Logan plant. The beets are said to average close to 15 per cent, which will yield a large tonnage In sugar and allow the eompauy as well as the farmers to prosper. At $5 a ton, there will be distributed distrib-uted $570,000 to the beet growers a I sum of money large enough to bring j prosperity to the entire county this fall. The first pay-day should call for the disbursing of a third of a million dollars This does not take account of the expenditures at the factory itself where a large force Is now being organized for the cam palgn. The war promises temporarily to save this industry from the ruin which threatened when the Demo crats provided for a sugar schedule which calls for free trade By the time the great conflict is ended in Europe, a Republican congress and a Republican president can he depend ed on to correct this blunder of the party now in power, oo |
