Taylor arrived here from Colonia, Juarez, in tiie Mexican Mormon Mor-mon colonies, after an experience which has turned Ills hair gray and j)ut deep Hues of care in his face. Taylor owes his life to the bravery ' of his. wife and to the clemency of a wounded Mexican who had been shot by Taylor while defending his home against the attack of a party of Castillo Cas-tillo bandits under the personal com-1 com-1 . mand of the new leader, Manuel Guit errez. Taylor was wanted by the Castillo bandits on the charge of heing un-( un-( friendly to them and giving informa tion to the rebels when a number of the bandits had been executed: Guiterrez Guit-errez and his band of ten rpde to the Taylor home in Colonia Juarez and entered the house. Taylor's two daughters fled out the , back door to the neighboring nouses , to give tho alarm, while their father and mother sought a refuge in the j parlor, where the organ from the ' Mormon church at Colnnia Juarez had J been placed to prevent it3 being car ried away from the church. , Taylor crouched behind the organ and his wife kept her body between the bandits with drawn rifles and her husband. Once she was not quick enough for the bandits, and three shots were fired at her husbaud over her shoulders. They missed Taylor, but splintered the organ. Then Guit-errez Guit-errez succeeded in covering Taylor with his revolver, after the Mormon had shot one of his men through the hand. Guiterrez was about to fire a bullet into the .American's brain, when Mrs. Taylor jerked his hand down. It was then announced that the execution would take -place in twenty minutes. "Witnesses were summoned and everything every-thing made ready. Then Guiterrez decided de-cided to leave Taylor's fate to the wounded bandit. The man requested that Taylor be spared for his wiTe and daughters. It was then decided that he must pay a ransom of $500 and for the care of the wopnded man. This was done and he was ordered to leave the country. Mr. Taylor is one of the leading members of the Mormon colonies In Mexico and has a son living here and one in Chihuahua, and relatives in Salt Lake City. |
