Smoldering Smolder-ing ruins in what was once l he populace popu-lace Mexican bonier town. Nuevn Lr- edo, and hundreds of destitute refugees refu-gees huddling in every possible shelter here were reminders todav of the desolation de-solation wrought late yesterday by Mexican federals who fired and dynamited dyna-mited their one-ill me stronghold. The excitement occasioned when the Mexicans began firing across the international line and their sharp in-terchangea in-terchangea Tith the United States border patrol, subsided quickh when the federals retreated, but left a strong; feeling of uneasiness. All night a reinforced patrol, aided by citizen volunteers, guarded the river front and heavy guards were maintained at the two international brldjes. It was feared other attempts to dynamite this means of rommunleat ion between the two countries would be made. Tw Mexicans were shot yesterdav in attempting to destroy the bridge, some of the more nervous citizens fear another visit to attack Laredo itself, it-self, but army . i finals, though every precaution Is being taken believe there Is no danger. There was no further trouble during the night. It was definitely ascertained today that the wild shooting of the Mexicans had done no damage on the American side. |
