' w York has a pcWce force, a part of which was in league with the gamblers of that city, and other cltle have officers who have proved to be holdups, but the most despicable o( all are the patrol men in the pay of San Francisco who have been caught robbing children. One policeman was caught picking pennies out ol a boy's pocket and another was proved to have takn $8 from children under a threat of arrest. A San Francisco paper says steal ing pennies from children is consid ered even among thieves as about ttv meanest and most contemptible t rim. that can be committed and it is n tonishlng that these things should ro on almost publicly at a time when there have been wholesale arrests and Indictment of policemen in the bunko cases. Ordinarily it might be expected that if graft had been going on by whole sale it would hunt its hole at least while Investigation was in the air.
