Show CONGRESS TO OE CALLED TO ACT Investigation of Colorado Coal Miners' Strike Demanded Forthwith. Denver, Colo. Oct 10 L'ommis sioner of Mediation Ethelbert Stewart Stew-art of the federal department of labor la-bor will recommend forthwith a congressional con-gressional Investigation of Colorado coal miners' strike as the result of a conference held here last night between be-tween the mediator. Governor E. M Ammons. and representatives of the largest coal operating companies Ludlow, Colo.. Oct. 10 Mack Powell, Pow-ell, a cow herder, was killed, and three strikers were wounded late yes terda afternoon jn a battle waged be tween strikers and mine guards near the Ludlow tent colony which lasted for an hour and a half Reports were made to Sheriff Gris-ham Gris-ham of Trinidad who was summoned here hastily, together with almost the entire enlistment of the state militia at Trinidad that many more were in Jured This, however, could not be verified. Riot Over Searchlight. The riot began when members of the Colorado Fuel and Iron company were on their way in an automobile to the station at Ludlow They were purposing 10 secure an electric search light which had arrhed by express, and with which the intended to keep their property lighted at night for protection against violent strikers. It is said by the sheriff that tho strikers knowing of the arrival of tb search light had determined to prevent its installation When the machine was within half a mile of the Ludlow station strikers, it is reported, began firing upon t : and Its occupants Bullets struck the I car. but no one was injured For I some time the guards who accompanied accompan-ied the machine returned the fire, which was .being directed at them from long range Then more guards arrUed and for an hour the firing was fast and furious. Cow Herder Killed Powell, who was rounding up some cattle on a ranch which bordered the scene of the fighting evidently was mistaken by the strikers, it is said by Sheriff Grisham. for a mounted mine guard, as many of the company men wore on horses Th sheriff de i.lared, howevei. that Powell was riding rid-ing at some distance from where the main body of guards were answering the strikers fire. An investigation of the flgbt Is being conducted by the sheriff with a view to making arrests for murder The sheriff last night had not determined de-termined whether a charge of murder would be placed against all of the Btrlkers, who might be found and believed be-lieved to be participants in the fight ing or the one person who fired tho fatal shot.
