Show THEATERS AT THE ORPHEUM. The bill at the Orpheum this week would seem to prove the contention that there Is little new In vaudeville Not that the bill doesn't average up well, but taking the program as a whole one finds about the usual category cat-egory of offerings, the dancers, the girl ocallst, the ventriloquist, the sketch and the athletic team Hock and Fulton, the headllners. scored heavily, as usual. In their spectacular spec-tacular songs and dances. Watching these artists move through their program, pro-gram, one does not realize until after ward the extreme cleverness of the pair a cleverness which is made up of hard and long study, and regard for essential details which makes for skill and finish and projects them far above the ordinary type of song and dance performers Their act reminds re-minds one of the work of a big league ball player, whose ever)' move is an example of careless ease. Maud Fulton Ful-ton and William Rock are the highest paid dancing team in vaudeville because be-cause they are the best. If thev were not you'd forget them 2 hours after the performance You won't forget Rock and Fulton. Tholr song and airy chatter about the "shifting" pic- tares is artistic In Its character study and the travesty on Bernhardt and Tellegon Is more than a travesty It Is quite a wonderful Impersonation If you have seen the "Divine Sarah" you will open vour eyes In wonderment wonder-ment at Miss Filton'8 resemblance to the great actrea in profile, gesture and voice Besides her other attributes attri-butes Miss Fulton is one of the sweetest sweet-est looking girls on tho vaudeville staffo. Kddy Howard, who Is well remembered remem-bered for his funnj work In "Back to Wellington'' last ear, returna. but not so strongly. In "Those Were the Hnp py IJbvh" It Is good fun. but runs a bad second to his former vehicle Possessed of tremendous vocal strength and enormous lung capacity to back it up. "The (;irl From Milwaukee Milwau-kee sent electric thrills through the audience with her singing. Her phras-and phras-and toue placement are exact enough, but there Isn't a great deal of music in her voice at that. She could fi finely advertise h rself as owning "the biggest voice in captlvitv ' Li.ie McMillan plays on the dramatic dramat-ic strings of gay humor and pathos with deft touch In The Lnte Mr. Allen Al-len " The sketch .frords Miss Mo Milian fine opportunity to play the pari of a woman i mare and in evcrj way all right but who enjoys a good time, too- the sort who has received many a "punch" In the prize ring of life but who comes back smiling every ev-ery time The radiance of the star Is reflected brightly In the audience at the end Lawrence Johnston, a ventriloquist with several new stunts in voice throwing and some old Jokes, and the Reed Brothers. capable gymnasts make up the rest of the hill, Sidney Baxter, the opener, being shy on pai aphernalm last night and not going on Delaved baggage caused the postponement post-ponement of his appearance until tonight |
