Show I THEATERS AT THE ORPHEUM. Vaudeville's most pretentious offer !ng. its act de luxe, resplendent with tinsel and gold and spangles, dazzling In its suggestion of wealth unended expended in Its production "The Fternal Waltz" has the spotlight over at the Orpheum this week. It is a magnificently sieged affair - that goes without question and because it Is the most colossal thing ever attempted attempt-ed as a single number on a vaudeville bill it Is worth paying one's respects to if for no other reason than Its extraordinary departure from what is presumed to constitute wiude- Hie Nothing more elaborate from a scenic point of vn-u has been staged In Ogden this season It Is a pretty picture indeed that is presented when the curtain ri6es on the second act and somewhat reminiscent of the savory sav-ory Bal Tabin scen In Mrs. Leslie Carter's "Two Women" - the women sipping their champagne and smoking cigarettes in the gay Chapeau Rouge with its brilliant electrolier and varicolored vari-colored lights of lesser candle-power throwing a glow on the fashionably gowned and uniformed ieelers. There isn't much of a dot (there isn't time even in a one-hour act), but such as there Is it is sufficient to enable en-able tho principals, headed by Cril Chadwlck and Mabel Berra, lo furnish fur-nish sufficient comedy and action. Aided by an orchestra of their own composed of several violins and a harp and supported by a chorus of voices that are strong and of goo-l quality the music is charming and given excellent rendition The waltz song as sung by Miss Berra and chor n rn,i u f( -aw nvatlon As a vaudeville act It will long be remembered, and at that the bill is not top-heavy, for the stamp of an proval must rest on the other number' also. Lola Merrill and Frank Otto have a smart turn, witty enough lo gain then Instant favor and a lot of laughs Mr Otto has a hard time in securing his share of attention at the wind up because of a frock or a gown (anyway (any-way it is a dress and clothes the lady pretty well) which Miss Merrill wears land which seems to be the objective of everyone's eyes, the men especulh , Otto Is forced at last to shout at the 1 w audience. "Why don't you look at me once In a while?" The audience last night had a glad hand for everybody, but enthusiasm boiled over when Joe Morris and Charlie Allen were "on" It wasn't so much what they did as how they did It, but even so, there's a lot of sheer ability behind all they do. Their cadenza of classics embracing every thing from "Lohengrin" to "Funiculi Punlcula," and all Interwoven with n mixture of ragtime melodies, brought j down the house, and they w ere called .back so many times that they were finally compelled to hoist the White I flag and plead for mercy. The Daring Darts are aptly named On a revolving ladder suspended In the renter they do Bharpshooting and bicycle riding In a most dare-devil way One of the boys holds the tnr gets, consisting or poker chips and Clay pipes in his fingers while the other picks em off ." I heir act is thrilling enough for ihe most blase Work & Play have a comedj acrobatic acro-batic turn which cnlls for a good deal of "work" but of which thc make I nothing but play." The ease with Which they accomplish their feats perhaps, ihe most noteworthy feature The Harveys are w ire-walker6 p i ext Hence They did not succeed in all their attempts last night, but thiH happens, unfortunately to the besl 0 ! them occasionally Their ability Is uniu08tioned. nevertheless Not ihe least enjoyable feature ol the evening was the work of the aug- mented orchestra Six additional j ' pieces added make the musical sup port distinctive in itself As a ?1 show, taken in its entirety the Orpheum show this week is a got li far outranks some of the 2 pro dui tlons Been at the playhouse this i season. |
