Show oo CELL THEORY OF THE SOUL OF MAN The series of evening sermons on "Life Beyond the Grave,' given in the First Presbyterian church, continued contin-ued last night, the theme of the nature na-ture and possibility of the cell theoi" of the soul After defining the nature and probable prob-able cause ot the sub-conscious phenomena, phe-nomena, such as hypnotism, telepath and tcleplnesis. Rev Carver in speak ing of their bearing upon the nature of the soul, said In part Wo read that it is that which is not seen that is eternal The isibl" forms of matter soon chance the es sence of matter lives on unchanged The face and form of man changes with the years; the real man Is continuous con-tinuous in life Cod Is unknowable. Yes and for many of us that is a cause for praise So much of that whli h we call knowable is more unsatisfying un-satisfying than If It were unknown onder star is thirty-two light years away, and one light year Is five million mil-lion six hundred and fifty-nine thousand thou-sand millions of miles So its distance is "known H Yes. but you do not have any more conception of its dls I tanee than if it were unknowable I Yonder plane! is five million tlnn-s the size of the earth So its size Is "known Yes. but you still have mi conception of ii It Is mere "C"s sip In polysyllables" Now, in think Ing about the soul, we ever realise that the soul is as invisible as the reality of any of the world's realities The cell theory of the soul is no more opposed by the fact that It can not be discerned with o microscope than is the fact or the reality of gen ius overthrown by the failure to find genius when man is dissected Anatomy Anat-omy has uever found the soul, but cannot therefore be called to witness that there Is no soul, for anatomy has never found the real self, or the music In the singer or the seal of chivalry or honor or sympathy in ihe noble minded Dissect the dead leader lead-er and the indolent and ae much Is in one as In the other of the rcmaina of energy The unknown, however, is very far from being the unreal. We may not be able to define n power or bleaslng and yet know of Its pres ence. One reason whv the sou! Is beyond the power of human discernment by means of the senses is that it deals with the verv states or attributes oi the human endowment that are no: physical. The writers have classified the soul under thrc powers of manifestation, mani-festation, via: Memory, consciousness and will. Around these cluster all ihe emotions, which have given to life Its charm and strength and with the 1 immortality of these will go all the ! life that we desire to keep as linmor Lai. But consciousness, memory and will ar- three fuctors of life that no anatomy has yet exposed to view We do read of opinions as to the seat of these, and yet Dr Hammond, in his volume. "The Brain Not the Sole Organ Or-gan of the Mind." and Ladd In his "Physiological Psychology.' have shown there Is no authority for localising lo-calising either of these In nn one particular organ. Ladd says "Everv organ. Indeed, every cerebral area and every psychic nerve cell has Its own memory What Cardinal Newman once said of the psychical faculty is as true of th organic basis "There are a hundred memories, as there are a hundred virtues" Every sense every faculty, so far as It comes under un-der the biological laws applying to retention re-tention and reproduction at all, does so In the particular and deMnlte associated as-sociated areas where Its physical ba-1 ba-1 sis Is laid There is sound reason .or speal ing of "a memory of the ear, ' I "memory of the eye" So too. or thu ' consciousness It Is supposed by some ' to have the cerebrum as lis chief or-! or-! gan. But this only means that the constitution and molecular changes of the nervous matter of the cerebrum are the onl Immediate antecedents or concomitants of the phenomena of consciousness : and thai srhatevi takes place In the bodv outside of the cerebrum, has an effect upon consciousness con-sciousness only as it gets Itself represented rep-resented as It were, within that supreme su-preme organ "All these Statements hav. as you who have followed these sermons realize re-alize s marked bearing upon the cell theory of the soul As we saw last Sunday night, there have for several years been a large number of educational lenders of all countries banded together to studs the seemingly abnormal phenomena known as spiritualism, telepathy, hypnotism, hyp-notism, telekinesis and kindred extra ordinary psychic phenomena. Many volumes of actual happenings have been collected, even after a great I mass of untrustworthy statements and I unproven manifestations have been discarded Although several years have been given to this work, no explanation ex-planation In the way of clearly defined defin-ed laws have been attained Bnougb has been done, however to overthrow most of the popular superstitions and mark certain lines along which new-Investigation new-Investigation will be directed as most likely to yield results. Hugo Munstrrberg. professor of psychology at Harvard thus summarizes summar-izes the three opinions today "Ws find three types of theories the first backed by laymen, the second by phv Biclans, the third by psychologlst'b The first group says the subconscious Is t pBychlcal system of a full, real personality below the couueious person; per-son; that subconscious Bolf remembers, remem-bers, thinks, feels, wills on Kb own accord, influences our conscious life helps It out shines through It and caujses the abnormal facta. Tho pop ulnr mind clings to such a convenient method of explanation the more closely close-ly as it is on this basis easy to hring the subconscious selves into telepathic telep-athic connection or link I hem with mystical agencies The second group says the subconscious is psy: hollgai, but not a system; It is made up of idas, but they do not form a personality: per-sonality: It Is dissociated - split off J mental material which only In a sec ondarv way may flow together Into a new detached self The subconscious is then not at all a regular psychical foundation but something either palh ologlcal or at least artificial. Th- third group flnallv says the subconscious subcon-scious that underlies the abnormal facts Is the same that underlies the ordinary process of memory, atten tlon. dreaming etc.: II Is not psychical at all but a physiological brain proc ess " And In conclusion Dr Munstcrberg says No fact of abnormal experience can by Itself prove that a psychological psychologi-cal and not a physiological question is needed; It Is a philosophical ques tlon and problem which must be settled set-tled by principle before the explanation explana-tion of the special facts begins Dr. Theodore Ribot ptofessor of psychology in the ollege of France, says that "There Is a dynamic subeon sclousness In a latent state of activity, Incubation and elaboration In even-person. even-person. From this source comes Inventive In-ventive work inspiration In all soru of discoveries and. to a feebler degree, de-gree, sudden repartee and bon mots In short everything which sparkle.'1 from us spontaneously." It is thus seen that the trend of I those who have spent much time investigating in-vestigating tho subconscious phenom ena and the abnormal phenomena is that they are only natural manifestations manifes-tations of our physical nature, no more wondcHul or um xplainable than sight or hearing or memory, but be cause they have been unusual, and our ordinary racultles are everyday realities, the unusual has been marveled mar-veled at when It Is not so marvelous as the daily work or the eye. What Is or i ital Interest to us tonight to-night in all this Is thai these phenom I ena have as deep a physiological reality re-ality as they have a psychological oil'-and oil'-and that has a direct bearing upon the cell lhory ol the bouI. We have I iken up this cell theory of the sou! because as far as we can discover It is the only theory of the soul that Is seriously considered by theologians, psychologists, physiologists physiolo-gists and phllasophlcal writers alike We speak very much about the soul and all believe In it, yet very few have ever given time to study th--varied views vipon it. and. in view of this gross Indifference, it Is not strange that many of those who say they believe in a soul, live and act as If they did not. There are always two classes of people. The one will take the easy way of explaining a difficult problem i such as mind reading or telekinesis, or subconsciousness, hv appealing to that which Is beyond nature The other will endeavor to ascertain If any of nature's laws could solve the problem. We do not nearly know the full reality of the natural endowments endow-ments of our lUes any more than we do or nature. Every orgnn in man's anatomy shows wonderful adaptation and purposi veness When the body digests a meal a hundred thousand cells are performing the most Intricate Intri-cate duties and selecting the right chemical processes as accurately as any chemist would do Yet no one claims mental powers for the diges live organs Their work Is simply be-Vond be-Vond Imagination an-1 bespeak the argument ar-gument for the cell theory of the soul as we developed It last Sunday. It is the same with all th other tissues as is shown for instance.
