They want them to go on and split with the county. And me there are here assert that those vio-lators of the booze law and the white slave law are in partnership with same of the servants of the county and that the revenue of the business is split and that the ordinary viola-tors are never bothered where the pay promptly the toll which is exact-ed of them. Now we have no intention of in-sinuating that the devout sheriff is in collusion with these violators. As to that we are in the dark, but any vio-lator who resists or procures a law-yer to defend him is looked on as a bad character, according to reports, and is in "dutch" so far as the bus-iness of breaking the moral law ii concerned. . The (rood bootlegger Is the one who makes his peace with the deputies, it is said, and pays the fund exacted without paying any por-tion to a lawyer to intercede for him. A bootlegger or an alleged boot-legger here who retains an attorney to speak in his behalf is a bad man. The other one, no matter how persis-tent he may have been in violating ihat law, has a clean sheet so it is said. So according to the reports one wishing to do a good business should not bother with legal council, but he should barter with the sheriff's depu- - ties and have easy sailing and pay a j license, as it is called, to get by. j Now the matter set out above may . be very much out of line with the facts, if the truth were known, but I that is what the people say about the j situation. And there is no denying j that fact that the knocking over of a . bootlegger by any means diminishes j the amount of booze dispensed. But I if a violator of these statutory lawf j depends upon a lawyer for security j it is said that he loses whatever se- - curity he may have had. , If those things are true the things I that a number of people say are true j the law enforcement business is rot- - j ten to say the least. And in other j words the enforcement of the prohi- - , bition and the white slave law3 is a J task that might be trying on the 1 strength of an honest man. In other j words to place one in such a position j is leading him into temptation. - At best it looks as though we are J licensing favored ones to break the - law provided they divide the profit, so obtained, for so doing. No wonder so many people say strange things about the way justice is administered. Of course its easy to talk and many people draw on their imaginations, but there is an old saying that where there is much smoke there must be some fire. We do not know. We wonder.
