Show AF AND 1 CA N lay 0 N int im co lu forthcoming revision of tariff was vas subject discussed washington dec 9 president elect taft and speaker cannon today had a conference of an hour and a half at the boardman board man residence where mr taft is a guest at its conclusion each participant announced that arrangements had been made whereby mr taft was waa to meet the republican members of the house committee on ways and means tomorrow aftem afternoon oon after wb which a statement would he be issued until this Is made sir taft said he and sir mr cannon had agreed not to discuss what has taken place between thorn thein the apparent satisfaction with which air taft explained the situation was kenas keneas ta an evid evidencia enca that matters were very much to hla his ilk liking ing it is known of course that the subject under discussion between tatt taft and cannon was the forthcoming revision of the tariff regarding which mr taft has declared himself most positively in favor of a thorough revision it la Is understood that very little was sald said concerning the details of the pro posed tariff legislation but that tho the conversation dealt entirely with the broad principles involved in that legislation mr taft and the speaker proceeded upon tho the express understanding that they had come together tog ethor as the representatives of two co ordin ate branches of the government anil and whatever of difference in details in tho the future may develop if i any discussion was in tho the friendliest possible way the understanding so BO far as there was any was that the presidents part in the preparation of new tariff would bo be confined to such suggestions as he ha may desire to make and while he ws was assured that these would be listener listened to by the house with every pos possible consideration ho he was not led to believe that the house would abandon its prerogative in tho the preparation ot of the now law nor was there any indication di on mr tafts part that he would expect or desire it to do so both agreed that tho the tariff should be revised and that the revision should bo be along tile tho lines indicated b by y the tariff plunk plank of the republican platform neither indicated a desire to depart from protective principles in tho the work to come when urged for a statement concerning tho the interview speaker canpon cannon replied that owing to the fact that he had met mr taft at the lat tors request ho he could say nothing |
