Show I 1 U FR fi v 1 0 M tet 1 LA ll 11 i all T ofin D IT ID 0 I 1 ALBERT FOULGER WRITES FROM KIMBERLEY SOUTH AFRICA with james G mckay he visits the largest diamond mine in ane world F fred red foulger of twenty fourth street has just duft received an interesting letter from his son albert who Is on a mission in south africa the son 0 a left ogdon ogden for his mission march marc h uth associated with elder E ider foulger 9 er in the south african Ar rican missionary work is ider elder D james G mckay ot ogden in his letter mr air foulger gives a very interesting description ot of one of the largest diamond mines of the world this paper paper has been granted the privilege of quoting from the letter as follows my dear folks last tuesday nider elder mckay and myself had the pleasure of going through the largest diamond mine in the world the deports pan I 1 can assure you it was an eye opener tor for roe me we arrived at the mine at 8 a m cherb we met a mr fuller an american the manager of the mine who personally wits was our guide we were supplied sur plied with a suit of miners clothes also a pair of shoes and by the way they weighed no less than eight pounds when we were dressed we had a good laugh at each other I 1 dont know whether it was the othes clothes or us but really wo we lo looked as though the depression had in no unmistakable way affected us after we were shown the hoisting machine etc we begot got on an elevator and went feet below the surface here we were supplied with candles and our experience in the bowels of the earth began begam my first surprise was to learn that the mine was fully equipped with an a n electric plant that provided for both light and travel our candles candled only being of service on going into the now new veins in this particular mine there are six miles of track with five electric engines en each hauling from twenty to thirty cars loaded with blue ground in which is found the diamonds the ground Is taken to the hoister where 16 tons a minute is taken to tho the surface after which it Is loaded in small cars and taken to what is called the floors where it is spread out in the open ata at a depth of from 18 inches to 3 feet where the weather is permitted to play upon it anus causing disintegration there are two shifts running one day and the other night of one thousand men each these men make from 2 shillings and sixpence to 5 shillings per day aay about coc to I 1 must he be brief or you will ho be charged excess postage we got out of the mine about 2 p to in after having gone through the escapes wading through mud climbing up vens late etc we then went to mr fullers office and had a good bath after which we went to lo 10 the compound a place where natives are kept you see gee when they go to work at the mines they really become prisoners to the de beers co and are kept in confinement while in the service of the company this place is guarded like a prison and run very much on the same order only the natives buy their own lood food and cook it just as they like the company has stores right in the compound I 1 am sure you will say ay I 1 have too much mine on the brain and not enough gospel as I 1 have not mentioned a thing about my work in all this long letter but you know I 1 thought it would be a change from what you havie have been getting every week I 1 1 I rejoice more than eyer in the gospel it becomes dearer to me every day I 1 live last month I 1 had the most gospel conversations I 1 have had any month la in africa and I 1 feel mat they were among the most profitable as well I 1 had twenty first invitations sixty tour four re invitations ana one hundred ninety five gospel conversations some opposition but no defeats yours with love BERT |
