Show BRYAN entertained BY RACQUET CLUB philadelphia feb 3 william J bryan was entertained at luncheon at the racquet club here today as tho guest of roland S president of the pennsylvania democratic club twenty persons were present prior to going to iche club mr bryan was asked by a reporter whether he was a candidate for the democratic presidential nomination mr bryan dictated the following reply if tha voters of the democratic party want another than myself nominated at denver they ought to instruct thedr delegates to that effect iahey want me they ought to instruct their delegates for me it Is not a matter to be decided by me or by any small faction of the democratic voters it Is for the majority of the democratic voters to determine ajril november last to stop the misrepresentations which were going about as to what 1 might or might not do and to the condition andor which I 1 might or might not be a candidate I 1 stated that I 1 would not ask for a nomination but that I 1 would bea candidate it it was the decree of the democratic party that I 1 should be believing that in parties as in popular government authority comes up to the official from the people I 1 believe that voters when they gather in their communities express themselves on party principles and candidates and then select their delegates in harmony with their ideas instructions are democratic because the delegate has no authority except as he receives instructional from the 61 and the delegate ought to say abat the voters said lo 10 the visitors mr bryan said 1 I have noticed of late a marked change among the clergymen they were very largely opposed to ma before but they have been studying affairs during the ladt ten years and their views have changed this Is a very hopeful sign to any mind now I 1 am invited by ministers to address conferences and they show me in other ways that instead of being hostile they are interested this afternoon mr bryan left tor reading pa |
