The following are extract frvm a letter from a sergeant In tht Seaforth hlghlandera dated Pec 10. ssys the London Telegraph ' The Illack Watch In front made an attempt to charge the position, but we bad to retire and simply run for It, the enemy biasing at us all the way and cropping our fellows like skittles from their spten did positions There was nothing for It but lo II down nnd pretend to be dead, and this I did about E 10 a n till, I presume, G p m the sun pour Ing down on me all tha time, and not a drink of water all day, and dara not stir hand or foot, and expecting every mlnuto to be my last 1 could hear nothing but the cries, moans and praysrs of tho wounded all around me but I daren't so much as look up to see who tbey were Shots and shells were going over me all day from tho enemy and our tide nnd plenty ot them striking within a yard of me I mean bullets, nut shells and yet they never hit me I bellave sumo ot the fellows lost their besdt ond walked right up to tbe enemy s place singing till they dropped them One youngster lying cloee to mo said bo would make a dart for It about 3pm I tried my beet to persuado him not to, but he would go A couplo of seconds later I could bear them pitting at him, and then his groans for about a mlnuts, nnd then he was quiet About this time the sun began to get fearfully hot, and I began to feel It in tbo legs, which were now very painful and swollen bceausq I was parched with thirst Most nf the wounded round ma had ceased groaning by this tlmt As It began to get dark I managed to wriggle my body through tho shrub further baik, and after 1 hnr been at It somo time on looking up, found myself my-self right In front of nnothcr In trenchment of the enemy They tent a few rounds at me lut they struck Just In front nnd ricocheted over my head After a bit, it getting darker, I got up and walked by and there was nothing but dead hlghlandera all over tho placo" |
