Show BUILDING TO PIOCHE report that mendenhall and deal contractors commenced grading monday A report comes from ballente that mendenhall and deal the contractors begun gracing grading on the branch of tho the salt balt lake route from Callen tc to pioche monday the commencement of this work has been long delayed hut but it Is hoped now that it will be pu pushed hed forward without delay speaking of the pioche branch the ballente Cal lente express sas says the grade from here to pioche has quite a history in 1888 the union pacific built the grade from Il lford to Cal ballente lente and a branch to the historical mining camp of pioche upon which the rails are about to be placed the failure of the baring brothers shortly after that time deprived that company of its resources and the line into here was abandoned in 1896 the utah pacific headed by A W me ale cune and fostered by the oregon short line laid seventy five miles of steel to uvada on tho the line between utah and nevada thus bringing the rails rail that much nearer then huntington took a hand and the work ceased and the right of way and grade were finally sold for taxes on no vember 21 1900 the san pedro los angeles and S salt alt lake railroad company w wag as organized and acquired a title to the old roadbed but the oregon short line people contended that dark clark had no rig right ht to the grade as it belonged to the oregon short line and as a result there followed one of the most bitter and hardest contested lights ever recorded in railway annals for months och coch c of the ibe contestants te maintained a small army in the hold field ad sever several al times serious trouble was anticipated in addition to these all an array of legal talent was fighting for the grade in the courts of utah and nevada and the struggle finally found its way to the circuit c court ou rt of af tb the a united states the matter was kept in the courts until 11 11 1902 when dark clark and harriman reached an agreement and the title passed passe d to the dark clark people |
