Show VOTE IN CHICAGO UNUSUALLY treavy SOCIALIST AND prohibitionists ARE ROUGHLY HANDLED riot narrowly averted at one of the polls machines are being used chicago april 2 not tot in many years has there been held in chicago a municipal election so important and far reaching in its effects as that which began at six this morning at the 1250 1256 voting precincts in this city besides the election of city official the people will decide or fall to decide the street car question which has hae ae kept it the city in agitation during the last two years this election also will be the first by which city officials are to be selected for a term of four years as again the two year term which has been the law in the past the tile polls will close at 4 hn in the afternoon and it Is estimated that citizens will express by their ballots ts their choice both as to candidates and the various questions of or public policy that will be submitted to tok the people today the republican managers claim that their candidate for mayor fred A busse present postmaster of chicago will have a 2 plurality of from to the democratic leaders e r 8 a assert sert their be belief ilef in the success of mayor edward F dunne by about the same advantage over busse that the republicans claim for their bandt date besides the candidates for office the people will be called on to vote on several propositions one of these Is the question of public policy by which the people will declare for or against approval of the traction ordinances passed by the cipp alt council vetoed by mayor dunne ana again passed over the veto while these ordinances have been made apart lapart in measure it 11 j is likely that party lines will be crossed by many of 0 the voters on the proposition the democratic platform declared against the ordinances and mayor alayor dunne has made III his s camp campaign algIl in opposition to them 2 the republican platform declared for the ordinances and mr busse Is pledged to enforcement of the measures if elected seldom in the history of chicago were the election precincts manned by SQ so largo an army of watchers and workers of both parties the day opened clear and cold numerous reports were received by the election commissioners of trouble throughout the city in one precinct of the first ward a policeman seated himself in the polling place and re fused to allow anybody to vote unless he was assured that they would vote vote right he ile was war arrested and locked lip P in the seventh ward ward a fight was precipitated by two men claiming to be challengers of the prohibition I 1 party who invaded a polling place carrying a large camera anil claimed the right to take a photograph of the voting machine they were thrown into the street and their camera with them the judges of the election in the twentieth precinct of the thirty fourth ward found that ballots had been cast after 99 voters had bad been checked off they closed the polling place flaco and counted the votes several times I 1 ansa long string ot of waiting threatened to break the door down dow unless they were allowed to vote A small riot was finally averted by ohp direction of the election commissioners that the voting be allowed to proceed and the error corrected in the count at the close of the day numerous reports of purchases of votes were received but none of them stood the light of investigation and up to noon no arrests had been madei made another fight was precipitated in the first precinct of the tenth ward by a socialist voter who refused to 10 accept the working of the new voting machine claiming that it would register only republican votes after much debate the voter was arrested the vote up to noon was remarkably heavy it being in a majority of tho the wards almost as heavy as at tho the last presidential election |
