Show CRANES I 1 SERM UN IL Y U 11 N L AS ER DELIVERED SUNDAY IN THE FIRST M E CHURCH text I 1 cor 15 1930 19 30 adut but NOW Is christ risen from the tile dead and becomes becomes the first fruits of them that slept on this glorious easter day in this house of faithful falth ful friends I 1 salute you in the language ot of our christ all IWI hal hail this is the greatest dav day of a all I 1 the year we prize that of the new year and thank god for its coming the time tiffie in which we may glance backward at our failures and resolve that by gods help we will make the coming year the best of 0 our life on the anniversary birthday of washington and Lino lincoln oln we review tha the valiant vallant deeds of those illustrious men of war and state and in the light of the lasting benefits accrued and yet accruing ac 1 from their unselfish service and aud loyalty 1 it to country and to flag we bless their t h ay r days and do homage homa geto to their n names ames we ve celebrate the fourth of july as a day on which our forefathers declared that all men are equal before the law and then went forth with pledged honor and consecrated lives to execute the doctrines of which they on thanksgiving day we praise the god of heaven for his bounteous gifts of the year and with our friends we cat drink and make merry the hours at christ mas time our hearts rejoice because of the incarnation of god coming himself in the aleah to reconcile the world and bring it back to its creator in love and in joyous remembrance of the gift of the christ we also bring tokens of our esteem and present them 10 90 our loved ones in the home but at tit eastertide raster tide we do the more rejoice because it marks the time in the which our savior conquered death overcame the grave and in his resul resurrection became our first fruits this I 1 is the day of all others in which angels men and nature speak their sentiments of appreciation toward almighty god for the manifestation of his ills love for the world which he made we read in revelation concerning the multiplied thousands thou sandr of angels gathered about the throne singing the redemption demp tion song in which the chorus declares worthy is the lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing and it seems to me that on 11 easter aster day the anthem must sound clearer and better than at any other time occurring and re occurring in the world men of earth join in the glad rejoicing on easter faster day in ili russia one peasant meeting another other will greet him with the exclamation christ Is 13 risen the tile other will reply r he is risen indeed in lapland neighbor meeting neighbor the two will stop together until their noses touch in token of remembrance that christ is risen this day in ireland the superstitious ious believe that since on the day of crucifixion the sun was darkened because of sorrow so on glad easter laster he dances with joy because of the resurrection ur of his master the christ here in ogden our hearts are somehow made gladder today than at any other time and we who are christians are assisted in our worship by those of our frienda friends whom have ii never ver acknowledged the personal savior aler and yet desire to show their gladness because he is alive and nature joins with us all in hearty response and comes forth this day from her winter abode in glad bird song and the springing of the flowers wo we have great cause for rejoicing because christ came into the world to seek and to sare save that which was lost we should praise him because he paid the price of our redemption oa on the cross and we should join with angels and nature and men in thanking god for this th is the springtime of our immortality marked by the glad easter oy when christ himself overcame came death and the grave I 1 am glad he went through the grave in doing it he fulfilled all prophecy in the old scriptures concerning himself he carried out the law and the prophets to the fullest extent and burying with the law of moses mose in honor he brought rought b forth from the grave the consummated gospel of reconciliation for farour our comfort and use today and what a gospel it is it tells us that though we arc sinners in the sight of goa GO 11 and this wo we are ready to concede that though we deserve only death from his presence in which we also agree that it is possible for us to be forgiven and fully reconciled if we but believe in christ and take mini him aa as our advocate and saving friend in coming from the tomb alive jesus proved his ills divinity in his teachings he told the people that ho he was the tho son of god come in the flesh from heaven to 0 show forth signa and wonders and to bring the world back to god while he lie hanged on the cross his ills enemies ene miek challenged him to show himself the son of god by coming down from his place of ignominious no torture it if he ile be the son of god cod let him come down and we will believe him but that would have frustrated the plan of redemption and ruined all so for fort the time christ waived the victory but on that glad day which memory we now celebrate christ did a greater miri ado aclo by coming to life again and in emerging from the tomb he performed a greater task than though he ile had accepted the challenge of the jews on oil golgotha in his resurrection christ demonstrated a future life this is tho strongest stron geat argument for immortality we are not able to scientifically SIX show ow ohp certainty of another sphere of existence Sk and indeed we waive the argument this morning hour but we do declare that because christ our elder older brother overcame death and came forth from the grave so shall wo we in our own good time conquer both and live again the undisputed fact that christ rose from the dead makes po isIble the truth of the second part of my text but now is christ risen from the dead and bot bet became become came come lie clio first fruits of them that hat slept this means that though we must all die to the world we albo couie coine from our temporary abode the grave and some form of 0 the immortal lifey there are many tAe theories ories concerning the resurrection and the nature of our oar future body time will permit roe me 0 merely werely mention some without passing discussion on any A f first we have the iaK theory the fundamental principle or which Is that in addition to our visible olo ible material body we also possess a thin airy spiritual which constitutes the home homa of the tho soul that when we drop this mortal body the inner habitation controlled by tho the spirit glides out into the invisible beyond and lives lived thereafter independent of earthly things this transition tran sidon of body and soul constitutes the resurrection then we have what is known as the germ or bone theory which belongs to tho the ancients but has ha a certain following today in substance it declares that there is in every human nody a certain portion indestructible that when it Is planted plan tej in fr the th earth or finds its way there like the germ of vegetable life it begins the process of reproduction which finally brings forth into new newness neiss of life the resurrected hous house of habitation I 1 and then we have the origene Origen lc idea dea which holds that the PO pos n certain plastic power is able as at first to gather about itself from fron surrounding elements a body suited to its condition and that when it leaves leave the ol 01 old d b body ody it proceeds to form forn another s suited ul te 1 to 0 its future needs but we prefer to all of these the scriptural declaration he that raised up christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by hla his spirit that dwell eth in you and again but god a body as it plea seth him these statements are sufficient for us there are many things concerning the natural and the supernatural pe rna tural which we cannot understand and yet we avail au ourselves of them so wo we purpose rc this day lay to meet the conditions of the happy resurrected life and let science work woric away as in the centuries gone I 1 n the vain attempt to solve all the mysteries of nature of god and of alan man the conditions of the happy erected life are before us now vo wo must believe belie ve also in christ believe all that he says concerning him himself self and us in relation to the present and future and placing our confidence in him confess him before the world as our individual savior and friend then as we lay our bodies down to rest from the toll and cares of this life it may he be with a full conscious ness that as christ himself came again from the grave thus becoming doming be the first fruits of the them 1 that slept so shall we follow after and reign howeth together e r with him and love diones gone be 1 l tore fore I 1 the musical program the following
