in a body I 1 all nature animate and inanimate seemed to vie with man in the appropriate prop celebration of the glorious easter time sunday morning broke broko bright and clear the buns suns rays were warmly mellow and the air fresh and invigorating and when the church bells bella tolled their melodious tones it seemed as if they too had caught the easter spirit and were echoing the general paean of thanksgiving services wore were held in all the churches especial attention being paid in most of 0 them to musical programs at the catholic church the services at st josephs church were beautifully and grandly impressive as is always the case on easter the magnificent altar was A blaze of glory under the light ot of many candles and the wealth of easter blaster illes lilies of the valley and other cut flow ers highly suggestive of the easter spirit the easter sermon was delivered by rev P 31 cushnahan while father ryan chanted the mass the sermon by father Cush nabin was in h his Is characteristic stirring style he dwelt at length on the significance of easter and showed from profane history and biblical history that there must have been a resurrection ahila easter was a mankind by christ rev J E carver selected bis his theme from 16 6 ho he ie Is risen he said in part this Is a historic day 1877 years ago today as the morning light was breaking upon the old city of jerusalem a small number of roman sol diers could ebule be seen guarding a rock hewn sepulchre just without tho the old walls of the tile city of the kings they were keeping watch over a grave wherein was supposed the remains remain of one who was crucified two days before this man was a of the way to god tho the history of his day is one long record of his wondrous healing his marvelous teaching and his awe inspiring power over the tile forces of life which heretofore had been considered supreme even while hanging upon the cross the city bad witnessed strange phenomena so wondrous indeed was this nian mans s power so ex his life that the roman authorities ties had ordered the watch over his grave fearing lest on an imposition should be wrought upon the people by his disciples saying that he arose when whon in reality he did not but on this first day of the week ho ile did arise and appeared during the next five weeks no less than ten ames am es to companies ranging from one to five hundred his own century gives us over thirty manuscripts telling of his resurrection ur in the century following his the disciples ot of those whom he himself had taught and who had seen his risen life give us many more and from that day until this eo so numerous are the evidences for the tho risen christ that to doubt the message of easter is to doubt history itself furthermore there are monuments which tell of the convincing power of the risen lord wo we mention here the church which his disciples founded and this day of the week known from his resurrection ur day as our worship day meet it Is indeed then sir knights that you join with us and we with you in praises unto him this day history describes for us the won darful places and the great achievements of the people of babylon and of rome these cities were the homes of great learning and of much wealth but the opportunities which the wealthy aull learned enjoy were in those days the opportunities of but a few A great mass were barred forever from lifes opportunities for they were slaves and it meant but little to them that others should be so fortunate so would it be with us if christ alone arose from thedeas the dead this day would have but little meaning it if there was no resurrection for you and tor for me but thanks be to gods wondrous mercy we see in a risen christ but a symbol but our own victory over death and because he arose we shall arise also our theme Is the resurrection as a factor in earnest living we note this first because of the influence which it has haz ever had upon the purity of living it this life were the all sincerity would lose much of its motive but when we realize that even our hidden thought and our secret endeavor sha shall 11 one day be made known not only to our god but unto others a great stimulus Is given to sincerity in thought and desire and the nobler impulses of life are buttressed by the truth ot of tho judgment it is easy to decry the present conditions of society and the present state of morals but when we lift our eyes to his torys page and discern that in no age has there been more of real sincerity real earnest and unselfish manhood and womanhood then we see that god through this truth of immortality Is evolving nobler character with each passing age there Is no place more interesting to the thinking man or no spot more pregnant with deep thought than the balls of learning it matters not whether they be the country schools or the great universities this Is true because here the youth are being trained for the future life but it life ended at twenty the school would lose most of its meaning so would our life here today and the truth of atour our SOULS immortality if this life Is is all we have lost the great incentive for earnest living but it if this life be but the portal of a boundless eternity then all of life Is lifted to a higher piano and purified b bv a nobler purpose note how as t this effects our trend of thought if it be that we live forever I 1 then who would store the mind with selfishness with impurity with doubt with hate or with malice we can conceive no life more miserable than one forever lived in the power of such trends of thought the same Is true with the reality of our heart and soul life here Is given to the human race loves greatest impetus how grandi grand that eternity wherein love sincerity faith gratitude hold everlasting sway how awful that eternity where auger evil thought low affection simple desire doubt and profanity rule supreme oh men and women doea does not this show us lifes true grandeur it lies not in the things of today wherein or in wealth of thought it lies in that boundless existence for which we are training let us then live that trend of life which shall be ours in that day when we awake shall be the trends of christs likeness but toda today has another meaning this day aspea speaks L of the release from lifes sorrows and do we not all know the depths deaths of sorrows Borro wB pangs aa As I 1 look into your faces I 1 see many who have been called to pasa pass through the deep sorrow loved ones have gone before and life has bs seemed lonely since their departure the child as well as the aged have been gathered from our midst here the message of the easter day he ie ir risen and because he Is risen we borrow not as those who have bave no hope A deep faith cheers us and the wondrous light which streams from the empty tomb pierces our darkest sorrow he e Is risen sen and those whom we loved and lost shall too arise Is not then this a glad day and a I 1 I 1 glad message does not its wondrous meaning strengthen your hearts 0 sir knight and bring to you greater resolve for earnest living are not your hearts quickened with ours in deeper love to him whom wo together serve and shall wo we not all go forth re solved anew that while time lasts we will live for him who so grandly lived for us special song service tho special song service at the
