shot and very injured this morning at ten minuses after 11 while passing through ithe state house yard on his way to ano capitol building two shots were fired from a rifle only one of them taking effect it struck mr groebel in the right side one third of tho distance down from the arm pit ao the hip the ball passed entirely through the body coming out through lue aright shoulder blade it Is not thought by the physicians in charge that the wound will prove fatal unless complications set in harland whittaker a farmer from butler county kentucky is under arrest charged with having fired the shots but be denies that he had anything to do with it five revolvers were found upon him when he wib taken into custody mr goebel in company with col jack chinn and warden eph lillard of tho frankfort penitentiary was walking up the sidewalk leading from the street to the capitol building goebel being on the right of the three when tho three men two of the distance from the street to the capitol a shot was fired irom the third story of the building occupied by tho offices of tho governor secretary of state and other leading of the state the ball struck mr goebel in the side and ho instantly dropped to the pavement chann and lillard instantly seized him chann saying as he did so 1 I guess they have got you goebel yes replied the wounded man 1 I guess they have got me for sure while chinn was holding the wounded man supporting his head in his arms tour shots were fired at both men all of them struck close making the dust fly from the brick pavement both chann and lillard stuck to their friend neither of them moving from his aldo until abo aring ceased when lillard ran tor help he had not far to go for there is always a crowd around the gates of the capitol building A crowd of men were around mr goebel in less than a minute and he was carried to the of dr fiume in the basement of the capitol hotel about one thousand foat from the spot where the shooting occurred dr hunio made a superficial examination of the wound he declared that the ball had penetrated the right lung and would in all probability prove fatal mr goebel was then hastily taken from the botrico of dr hume to his own room on the second floor of the capitol hotel guards were stationed at tho foot of every staircase leading to the leond floor and nobody not even the giosta of the hotel was allowed to pass A more exuded examination made by dr hume and several physicians who had been called resulted in the announcement eliat the wound was not necessarily fatal and that the wounded man would in alj probability rece yr tho ball it was found had inflicted a wound which was somewhat of a glancing nature and had not gone through the lung in a direct line as dr hume had thought upon the first examination had the ball struck the chest halt an lach to the right U would have caused certain death the house was in session when the occurred and the senate was to have met within twenty minutes the capitol building was therefore filled with of the legislature and the greatest prevailed through the halls men ran wildly down the steps without hat or coat and one member of he house came out carrying in his hand a bill on which ho had been arguing when the shooting occurred by the time the members of the legislature reached the lower floor goebel was on his way to the office ot dr hume members hastily hurried back to their room adjourned with the most unceremonious haste and poured down into the street again the news that goebel had been shot spread through tho streets with lightning rapidity and in a few minutes crowds were hastening toward the capitol from every direction down st claar street which runs directly south from the sidewalk leading to the capitol upon which mr gocbel was walking at the time he was shot came a dense crowd 0 wildly excited men headed by two members of the city anre department one of them carried a ride and the other was telling him to put down that thing and go back lie finally agreed to do this and the crowd under his leadership melted and went away about three minutes after the shooting a line of men were thrown around the building from which the shots were brej with the intention of preventing ane escape of anybody from the structure john W miles an aged citizen ot frankfort was standing at the foot of the stairway leading from the first floor of the effite building to tho west when a man evidently a mountaineer came rushing down the steps miles in stanly threw his arms around tho man and held him calling loudly for help assistance was close at hand and no escape was possible for the prisoner even had he attempted to make the effort men stood around him on every side with drawn revolvers in their hands and the slightest attempt at escape would have resulted in hia instant death he submitted to arrest very quietly claiming again and again that he had nothing to do with the shooting he gave his namo as harland whittaker and said that he was in the state office building when he heard the shots and believing the long predicted battle in the streets 0 frankfort had come at last hastened out to sec what was going on ho was bearch cd at once and the largo revolvers vol vers all fully loaded were taken from him none of the cartridges had been exploded and there was no sign of any of the weapons having been in j use it was at first thought that he might have replaced the used cartridges with fresh ones but there wa no sign of powder upon any of the revolvers vol vers he was hurried to the jail three blocks away with all possible haste it being feared that an attempt might be made to lynch him it the crowd was able to secure him he was very quiet and did not lose bla composure for an instant notwithstanding the excitement around him 1 I know no more about it than any of you he remarked 1 I was on the first floor I 1 heard the shots and heard somebody say some one was shot I 1 thought that all this trouble they have been talking about had just commenced and I 1 ran down the steps to see what was going on A roan grabbed me and another got around me and here I 1 am and that is all I 1 know and that is a fact that the attempt to kill mr gobel was deliberate admits of no doubt and the only wonder is that it failed there was no reason why it should have failed except tor poor marksmanship tho window from which the shots were farej was raised about eight inches from the bottom and the man who fired at him had a perfect range of not over feet with goebels tall figure in a black overcoat in sharp relief against the snow covered ground behind him it is claimed by many judges of good shooting who abound in frankfort at tho present time that the would bo assassin was misled by tho looseness of the overcoat and fired too much to one side both colonel chinn and warden lillard declared that smokeless powder was used in the cartridges that vero fired at goebel the republican officials acted with the greatest promptitude adjutant general collier was sitting in his office when the shots were fired he was not over three hundred feet from goebel when ho fell he instantly rushed out 0 the building and learning that goebel bad been shot he telephoned to tho armory on tho hill where all during the gubernatorial contest uio local company of infantry had been held in reserve and within twenty minutes the company thirty fc trong under command of capt wolcott was drawn up in front of the capitol building the guards were placed at every gate leading to the capitol grounds and nobody was permitted to enter or leave there was talk on every side of placing under arrest every man who was in the building when the shots were fired even including governor taylor though of course nobody believed for a moment that he had any knowledge of tho crime he expressed himself immediately after the shooting as being extremely sorry that such a thing bad happened assistant secretary ot state davidson said there have been about forty men more or less sleeping in tho upper part of the building tor more than a beok they were allowed to spend the night there and took their meals elsewhere we do not know their names we are more than anxious to lend every possible aid to the authorities in finding the assassin when it became noised around that goebel had been shot members made a mad rush to the telephones and filed voluminous messages to their constituents and within two hours replies began to pour in the general run of them having but ono tenor which vas we are coming it is expected that fully five thousand men will arrive in frankfort before tomorrow morning all the military strength of the state will be called out and hurried to frankfort the democrats are keeping exceedingly close watch over the person of J C W the contestant for tho position of lacut governor they declare that if goebel dies there will be no governor but peckham he is kept in his room at the capitol hotel and will be guarded very closely until the trouble is over he declares he needs no guards but the democrats pay no attention to ills it was reported at one that speaker tramble of the house had declared that the legislature would removed to covington and that goebel would there be declared governor cincinnati ohio jan 30 arthur goebel a brother of the senator left at 1 on a special train with the most eminent surgeons available in this city arthur goebel is a member of the largo firm of lowery goebel of cincinnati |
