Show BEET GROWING A GREAT let er sent out by the ogdan sugar company to learn of the methods used by the farmers in the growing and handling of their beets the success of alie ogden sugar factory as a manufacturing enterprise was preceded by a successful reason and 1 hiie for the farmers who raised betsa the company management and tha farmers hae been drawn more closely together during the past year in this bustnes s and it was to their mutual interest that each should aid the other to that end the sugar company sent out a letter making a number of suggestions to the beet growers the substance 0 which follows although at first more or less of an experiment it has now been demonstrated st by actual experience that weber davis box elder cache and morgan counties are generally speaking eminently adapted for beet cultivation and as the beet growers arc incoming more acquainted with the requirements quire ments of tha chop its profitable nature is more and gioie apparent by raising beets tho people have not only made il possible to keep annually hundreds of thousands oc dollars in their own midst but they have also caused the greater portion of that money to be scattered among thousands of farmers and laborers giving employment to a great number 0 men and children long after the general harvest is completed the advantages of a secured market at a certain and profitable price guar aniced to the growers before plow time have been fully appreciated ty the farmers which is evidenced by the i tact that three times as many farmers have engaged in beet cultivation for the year isaa than were so engaged in and from the present outlook it is apparent that not only a greater number of farmers will engage in beet growing for the coming year but that many of the present growers increase their acreage of course in every obstacles must be expected and encountered and the beet crop for this year has not been an exception to tho rule some of obstacles were tho result of the cold dry and backward which we experienced this year in this locality and which affected the beet crop as it did every other crop more or less but after all most of the difficulties can be accounted for by the fact that the deep plowing required for beet raising nas been a new tiling to moat of our farmers and has not been generally observed the absence of such ii lowing has prevented the beet from taking Us downward course and appear in its natural shape of a long and comparatively narrow root but on mhd contrary has caused it to become short thick and chubby with a number of small root bets attached to the aldo of the main beet such beets of conrao will not give as great a tonnage to tho aero as would a beet which by reason of the existence of loose soil would be enabled to increase uniformly in size as it penetrated the ground besides many farmers have erroneously supposed that a large amount of irrigation would increase their tonnage the fallacy of this idea is apparent when it is remembered that the only mission 0 the beet tops is to furnish to the roots a sufficient supply of the nourishment contained in the sunshine and in the atmosphere and that after the tops have attained a sufficient height and strength to accomplish that purpose no further opportunity should be given to increase their size but that after such time the beefy should be compelled to seek tor its moisture in the deeper portions of the boil benco it irrigation is applied to the crop after the leaves have attained full growth it has the effect to cause the leaves to become oversized and the tops stronger than necessary while at the same time the beela receiving sufficient moisture from the top of soil refuse to go downward for water find the result is evidenced by a harvest of small immature and deformed roots with a profuse crop of tops valuable only for fed and fertilizing of course as these facts appear to he grower they aro promptly taken advantage of and the repetition of the prevented if wo should tersely express the rules for successful beet raising we could not state them better than by quoting an eminent authority on western beet growing when ho said plow deep sow amply thin carefully cultivate assiduously irrigate sparsely and you will harvest early and plenty alie observations made by various farmers on in this region would e of great to beet growers generally and tor that purpose we enclose a number of questions relating to your land and your beet crop the prompt answers to which we would very much appreciate yours truly OGDEN SUGAR
