Show DYE DEFEATS MATTSON IN PRIMARIES Republicans and others -were out to the primaries last evening, partisans par-tisans of two Wobe r county men vho desire a nomination in tho state convention, which mcet3 In Salt Lake September 5. County Clerk Samuel G. Dye, aspiring for the nomination for state treasurer opposed David Mattson, the present state treasurer, treasur-er, who desires to be nominated for secretary of state. Both sides had been lining up their forces for the primary and each succeeded In getting a Btrong following. follow-ing. Both sides this morning make their claims as to the division of tho delegates to tho state convention. Tho Dye managers said they have forty of the fifty delegates while Mattson men contended that they have twenty-four of the fifty-two. Mattson says he will concede Dye a majority of the delegates by four, he claiming to have twonty-four to Dye's twenty-eight. However, Davo Mattson today is wondering why the Governor Spry' forces gave him the double cross. He was depending on the governor's aid and stated this morning that he had thought the governor was his friend. After the contest of last night and the attitude of the Spry organ this morning, the stato treasurer decidc.d that he had been deceived. The reason rea-son for tho attitude of the Spry forces, it is stated, is that the paper here thought Dave Mattson controlled con-trolled certain patronage that he should have turned over to the shoet, but failed to do. The contest between Dye and Mattson Matt-son now is as to the committee on "order of business" in the state convention. con-vention. If Mattson'3 ornce comen first and Mattson loses, It leaves the rreaauryship for Dye, and vice versa. Tt is probable, though that tho delegations dele-gations from other parts of the state will step In and advise the Weber county delegates that if they cannot agree on a man for one place on the state ticket, the secretaryship and the treasuryship will go elsewhere. Speaking of the situation this morning, Mattson Bald that ho "was about as far away from a political combination as he could be and that he understood from tho beginning that all the political workers were fighting him. It was in a friendly way, he said, but none the less effective. ef-fective. He thinks he will carry tho state convention over Dye and that he will be nominated. Dye on the other hand has no predictions to mahc but says he is satisfied with tho outlook and that ho will b in the running. The two men livo in the same district, dis-trict, the Twelfth, and Dye defeated Mattson there by a good margin, In fact Mr. Mattson was not selected as a dalegate from his own district, the delegates being Dye and C. IL Hol-lingsworth. Hol-lingsworth. The latter Is lined up with the Dye forces and he will carry his working ability to the state convention con-vention for Mr. Dye.
