With Senator Sen-ator Wlnthrop Murray Crano of Massachusetts and Senator Reed Smoot of Utah busily canvassing the membors of the senate In a last desperate des-perate effort to sav him. Senator William Lorimer of Illinois talked against time yesterday, attacking the newspapers, President Taft, Theo-doro Theo-doro Roosevelt and William Jennings Bryan and reaching his climax when ho poured out his vials of wrath on Senator Kern of Indiana. The attack on Senator Kern, who has fought Lorimer most aggressively, aggressive-ly, was sensational and spectacular. It wns unprecedented In the history of tho senate. Lorimer sneered at him, jeered him, taunted him and challenged him publicly to point to any wrongdoing in his life. "Come one," shouted Lorimer, perspiration per-spiration streaming down his faco. "Come on, Senator Kern, come on and make good." Ho screamed this defiance until his voice broke. And all the time that Lorimer was delivering deliv-ering his tirade against him Senator Kern lay ill on a couch In his room in the senate office building .unconscious .uncon-scious of tho scorn that was being heaped upon him. When later he was informed of It, Senator Kern gathered his strength and made his way into the senate chamber, where he took a seat directly di-rectly In front of Lorimer aid facing him. But the attack had apent its foroe LorlmeT wa talking of something some-thing else. It was left for Senator Kern simply to prepare to reply to Lorimer when he can get the floor. Lorimer was at his best. He alternately al-ternately pleaded and stormed. When he pleaded his voice quivered with emotion. When ho stormed he paced up and down and raged llko a wild animal at bay. He had a larger audience than the day boforo and it had its effect on him, but when he quit for tho day exhausted the only senators who stepped forward and shook his hand wepre tho ones who have supported him throughout. They were Senators Dillingham, Gamble and Fletcher, for instance, all three of whom has been for him since tho charges of corruption cor-ruption wore first made. To all appearances not a single oto has been changed in his favor as a result of his two days' appeal. He will resume his speoch tomorrow. While he is pounding awav at tho senate. Crane, Smoot, Dillingham and his other supporters will continue their canvass for votes. It is their last dosperate hope. Lorimer 13 doomed.
