Kelly, president and general manager of the Ellaye Motion Picture company of Los Angeles, which proposes to stage a remarkable picture-story in and about this city to be entitled "A Hundred Years of Mormonlsm," arrived In Salt Lake yesterday, and was in conference during tho afternoon with the Mormon Mor-mon church officials The film will toll the story of Mor-monism Mor-monism from Its Inception to the present day. Forty of the most prominent promi-nent actors in the motion picture business bus-iness will be brought here to take the roles of leading characters In the great historical drama, and more than COO local men, women and children will be employed to fill lesser parts. President Joseph F. Smith and other oth-er officials of the church may consent con-sent to appear before the camera In the latter stage of contemporaneous events in the church. After the conference with the Mormon Mor-mon authorities yesterday. Mr. Kelly said the entire film would have the sanction of the church before It is put In circulation. Mr. Kelly will begin Immediately the extensive preparations necessary for making the film. He will defer the actual use of the picture taking machine ma-chine until the latter part of the month or the first of August, in order to take advantage of the clearer atmosphere at-mosphere that prevails In this vicinity at that period. Scores of oxen, mules, old-time prairie wagons and other paraphernalia parapher-nalia necessary to tho realism of the film are now being negotiated for Contracts already have been made with the actors for tho leading roles. Tho story will begin with the finding find-ing of the golden plates in the Hill Cuyaorah, ns recounted in the early traditions of. the church. It will show tjte original founder of the church, oseph Smith, from his boyhood until tho hour of Ms death at the hands of a mob b; a Missouri jail. It will trace te growth of the church from its infancy in-fancy to the powerful organization it is today, including the epochal exodus from civilization, the long tramp across the plains and tho founding of a new empire boyond the Rocky mountains. It will deal with the missionary mis-sionary phase, the Incidents of pioneer pio-neer Hfo, the turmoil of territorial days, concluding with an unbiased presentation of actual conditions as thoy exist today. When completed, the film will have cost about $50,000. Five men aro at work now on the scenario. They arc men who have made a thorough study of Mormon history, and are possessed of accurate data concerning facts and romantic Incidents thereof. The scenes will bo staged for the most part In the mountains near this city, presumably in Emigration canyon. |
