With Sonators Murraj, Crane, Boles, Penroso and other Republican leaders, Senator Smoot had spent most of the day In preparation or the defonso of tho national committee In the selection selec-tion of the temporary roll of the convention, con-vention, and Smoot had been chosen to close for the Taft side In the debate this afternoon. Whilo Watson of Indiana, who Smoot was to follow, was speaking, a referonce to Governo'r Hadley was tho signal for a remarkable demonstrations demon-strations that continued forty-five minutes This delayed the game so long that it was deemed the part of wisdom to forco a vote. Watson therefore, without concluding his address, ad-dress, made a motion to table and thus shut off debate and eliminate Smoot's part in the controversy. |
