Mj This is the time of year when the Ogden young boy gets busv. 1 It is the season of circus and excursion and the average youngster M is forced to gather his own funds with which to pay his way on 1 train or under the spread of canvas. Hj There is the bottle boy who regrets that his folks are counted H with the drys and that father seldom, though slyly, brings home a H bottle of beer. The lad is satisfied with less than the foam. He H simply wants the empty bottle, because, when he has gathered a M dozen, he can count on 15 cents from the junk man. There is the boyvho encourages the use of sugar and potatoes M by the hundred pounds, because after the sugar and potatoes come M sacks and sacks are worth money when the junk man comes H around. I ,Th? b?' WUh a l0ng head goes ont t0 the slouShs and the ponds M in the lowlands and brings back frog legs for which he is paid 25 H cents a dozen. Then he hustles onco more in the service of tho I eP,cure and retus with mushrooms from old pastures and vacant lots, receiving 25 cents a basket for the appetizers which he guar- antees to be free from toadstools. He makes a third trip for watercress water-cress and receives another 25 cents. Sometimes he has a bunch ot mint for which he is paid 10 cents by the club where the older boys are fond of mint juleps. But the boy who has money for every show is the little fellow down on the river bottom whose trained eyes sec the round pebbles used in grinding cement, which the factories buy by the sackful. These pebbles at one time had to be imported from Germany, but that was before the American boy knew he could displace the foreigner. for-eigner. Vacation days are near at hand, when every small boy with an ambition will be engaged in some one of these vocations that appeal so strongly to the youngster who has not a Lincoln penny and is in urgent need of from 25 cents to a dollar in order to make a few of his many dreams come true. The boy who struggles for his spending money is learning a lesson as a stepping stone to success. lie is learning the value of money and experiencing the pleasure of gaining his aims through his own efforts. |
