Show RECORD CRIME WAVE STARTED BY NEW YORK'S "REVOLVER LAW." New York state is being swept by a crime wave the like of which has not happened in its history. From all sections of the state come reports of highway robber" s, safe blowing, burglaries, assaults and holdups. In New York City crimes of violence have become so serious that the burglary insurance companies have raised their rates fifty per cent, while they refuse to have anything at all to do with certain daises of risks. The recent $25,000 taxi-cab holdup in almost the very heart of the financial district was sandwiched between Iwo sensational highway high-way robberies that took place in broad daylight in the presence of thousands of pedestrians in the most crowded section of Thirty-fifth street. The three crimes took place within thirty hours of one another. an-other. -Scores of burglaries, or attempted burglaries, are happening, every day Vnd"Wak thicve are operating by the 'hundreds. Many of thp detectives thus called are vetoransjon tho retired list. Bankers, defectives and others concerned in the operations of criminals blamo the lawless condition of the Commonwealth on New York State's new "Revolver Law," which was aimed to make it impossible for the crook to buy firearms, but which was found to operate against the law-abiding citizen who is prevented from purchasing pur-chasing firearms even for home protection. Experts, like W. J. Burns, tho detective of Los Angeles fame, arc attacking the law on the ground of manifest absurdity. They point out that the law' cannot prevent the crook from obtaining knives and slung shots and that to disarm the law-abiding is simpty a guarantee to the crook that he finds defenseless victims. |
