Show FREAK ISLAND SAN MIGUEL Santa Barbara, Cal., March l. Snn Miguel, the freak island of the Sauiu Barbara channel chain, the ownership of which was claimed by Captain W. G. Waters, has become the undisputed undisput-ed property of the United States. Waters Wa-ters laid claim to the island because it was not mentioned In the cession treaties of Spain and Mexico, or Mexico Mex-ico and the United States. For recognizing rec-ognizing the federal sovereignty Waters Wa-ters was given a lease of five years and after that period the government will lease it to tho highest bidder. The island continues to justify Its freakish reputation. Somo years ago an earthquake shock shook ono end loose and it fell into the sea In recent re-cent times winds brought clouds of sand from somewhere on the mainland, main-land, filling up tho canyons, killing the grass and driving the sheep to tho leeward side of the island. During the February drouth winds look the sands away as mysteriously as they canio, cleaning the canyons and levelling lev-elling the dunes to the far pasture leel. oo |
